For pet owners without a fence, keeping your pet safely confined to your backyard can be a challenge. You can use a dog tie out or dog exercise pen; however, these do not always provide adequate roaming room for your pups and are often shorter term solutions. If you want your pup to be able to wander around all day long, you’ll probably benefit from having an electric dog fence system installed. This will give your pet the ability to roam about your yard as he pleases while staying within designated boundaries.
Once a perimeter wire is buried around the yard, establishing the area that a dog will be able to run around in, these invisible dog fences sync up to a transmitter. An electric dog fence collar provides the pup with a gentle static correction whenever he reaches the edge of the yard. Over time, a dog will learn the boundaries and won’t even need to approach them. Thus, pet owners can rest assure that their pups will be able to enjoy some outdoor time without wandering out of their yard, getting lost or being hit by a passing car.
Chewy offers a variety of electric dog fence collars that work in conjunction with electric dog fence systems. The PetSafe Wireless Fence Receiver Collar, for instance, is an electric dog fence collar that is compatible with the Wireless Fence Containment System and the Stay + Play Wireless Fence and comes with five levels of static corrections, as well as a tone-only mode. The Country Brook Design replacement receiver dog collar provides a stylish means of keeping your pup safe, as it comes in a fashionable paisley print in a variety of patterns and shades. And the PetSafe Elite Little Dog in-ground fence receiver dog collar is an extra receiver that allows an owner of multiple dogs to add another dog to their existing electric dog fence. Can electric fence dog collars get wet?
Most electric fence dog collars can get wet, but be sure to read the product specifications to learn exactly how much water they can withstand. Some may be water resistant and suitable for use in the rain, while others may be fully submersible; ideal if your dog has access to bodies of water. Electric fence collars are also designed to be safe for your pet even if they do get wet.
What are the best electric fence dog collars?
The best electric fence dog collars are water-resistant and lightweight models that deliver a range of different correction signals for training purposes. Look for collars with tone-only, vibration and multiple electrical stimulus settings, so you can tailor the correction to your dog’s temperament and training stage. Other features to look for in dog collars for fences include long range and resistance to interference, so you can be sure your invisible fence and collar system will operate reliably.
How do dog collars for wireless fences work?
Dog collars for wireless fences work by receiving a signal from the fence system’s transmitter. The collars then transmit a warning tone, vibration or electric pulse to let the dog know he has come too close to the forbidden boundary. Wireless fences dog collars are intended for use as a training device that teaches your dog where he should and should not go.

Cesar Millan’s Dog Training Methodology and the Halo Collar
Cesar Millan knows dogs. Cesar has starred in TV shows and written multiple New York Times best selling books about dog obedience training and rehabilitation.
Throughout his lifetime of experience working with dogs, Cesar has learned a lot about their psychology. He understands that their brains work differently than human brains, so they cannot simply be treated like human children.
In light of this knowledge, Cesar has developed a way of interacting with and training dogs that is consistent with their instincts and natural capacity to learn. Cesar has partnered with Halo on our mission to make the world a safer place for dogs, and his training methodology was baked into every aspect of the Halo Collar – from the training modules to the way the collar’s Feedback works.
Keep reading to learn more about how dogs learn differently than humans, and how that wisdom was leveraged in creating the Halo Collar Wireless GPS Dog Fence.
How dogs learn differently than humans
“Learning a little bit about dog psychology can make training a lot easier” – expert dog trainer Heather Mickelson
Simply put, human beings learn through memories of the past; we remember what has worked and what hasn’t. We are generally aware of our past experiences – through trial and error – and draw on those experiences to make informed decisions in the present.
Dogs, on the other hand, learn through their associative memory. That is, they easily learn the relationship between two things that are experienced at the same time.
In contrast to humans, dogs are always living in the present moment. For example: If you are walking your dog while in a bad mood, anxious, tugging on the leash or arguing with your dog to “finish their business” faster – you have begun to create a negative association with you, the leash and the walk – whether you realize it or not.
The next time you get a leash out prior to walking, they will not remember the exact circumstances surrounding the previous walk, but they will remember feeling negative emotions on a walk because dogs feel our energy. After repeating an example such as the one given, the negative association is being reinforced while simultaneously showing the dog that you are not someone to trust and respect.
The same phenomenon can occur in examples of positive associations too. If your dog learns that a certain ‘good’ behavior will result in them receiving a treat, then you can be sure that they will make a strong instinctive association between those two events (producing the good behavior and receiving a treat).
The Halo Collar and Wireless Dog Fence is a precise tool that will communicate with your dog at exactly the right time, allowing them to seamlessly form the associations they need to keep them safely within their designated boundaries.
Halo uses associative feedback to teach your dog to respond to prompts from the Halo Collar. Just like your dog reacts to someone ringing the doorbell, they will also learn how to respond to the escalating ‘keep away’ prompts and the ‘come home’ Return Whistle from Halo.
As Heather Mickelson says, “This training will work with any dog, any breed, no matter how stubborn you think your dog is.”
With a little time and patience, you will be enjoying a whole new level of communication and freedom with your pup that’ll last a lifetime.
How Halo works with your dog’s natural instincts
Dogs instinctively follow the lead of their Pack leader. You are your dog’s Pack leader, and the Halo Collar is an extension of you and your leadership.
Guidance aimed at dogs needs to be clear, concise, and consistent. Rules, boundaries, and limitations help to keep your dog safe and give you peace of mind. Because your dog understands what is expected of them, you are providing them with the freedom to just be a dog and enjoy life.
Cesar recognizes that a dog’s sense of smell is the most important tool they use to learn. They use their nose first, then their eyes, then their ears. As you go through Cesar’s in-app Halo Training Program, you will notice that Halo uses the curiosity created by the nose to help your dog learn. This method will allow them to create the right associations to understand what is expected of them and keep them safe.
You will help your dog to make positive associations with their Halo Collar. Once your pup is comfortable with their collar, you will begin to train them to respond to the collar’s communication.
Eventually, your dog will learn to associate collar feedback with returning to safety. Once this association is firmly entrenched in their associative memory, it will be like clockwork. No matter where their focus is during a given moment, if they receive feedback from their Halo Collar, they will instinctively know exactly what to do.
If your dog can learn to respond appropriately to feedback prompts when they are fixated on a high-value food item or high-intensity distraction, then they can also respond appropriately to those same feedback prompts if they become distracted by something out in your yard or wherever else you take them.
While these principles apply to all dogs, the way each dog responds to the stimuli will vary greatly, depending on both the nature and intensity of the stimuli. That is why Halo offers a variety of prompts to keep your pup contained, including sounds, vibrations, and static feedback.
There is an entire section of training dedicated to helping you determine which feedback prompts your pup will respond to most reliably. This way, you can fully customize your pup’s prompts so that your Halo Collar is offering them the best protection possible.
A dog training program that actually works
“Once your dog completes the Halo training, these lessons become instinctual by nature, and they form lifelong habits” – Heather Mickelson
The Halo System is only as effective as the training program that teaches you and your pup how to use it. Luckily, Cesar Millan eats, sleeps, and breathes effective dog communication!
Every aspect of the training process is meticulously thought out. Halo training begins indoors – where the stakes are low. Your dog will learn how to behave first, and then the training will take them outside once they understand how to react to the collar’s communication.
Cesar emphasizes how important it is to “Practice the activities that nurture your dog’s instincts: exercise, discipline, and affection. ”
Halo Pet Training allows you to do all of those things. That is why Halo is better than any other wireless dog fences. “Exercise addresses the body, discipline addresses the mind, and affection addresses the heart.”
Cesar knows how important it is to provide your dog with the opportunity to expel their excess energy through structured activities that include both mental and physical exercise.
These activities are essential to your dog’s physical and mental health and help them to be relaxed and focused before you begin training. Halo Training includes instructions that specifically teach you how to engage with your dog – using structured enrichment activities – before training to achieve more effective and efficient results.
One of the core tenets of Cesar’s dog training program is setting clear “rules, boundaries, and limitations” to provide structure for your dog.
- Rules are standard boundaries that you set for your dog, like not pulling on the leash or barking at guests
- Boundaries are borders that represent where your dog can or cannot go, like staying in the yard, or keeping away from the stove
- Limitations help limit the length or intensity of an activity, like calming down or coming inside
Providing your dog with this structure is part of your responsibility as a Pack leader. Your dog will instinctively appreciate you for making things natural, and easier, for them by setting clear expectations.
“By helping our dogs to stay within a chosen fenced area, we’re teaching them how to be respectful,” Cesar says. “In return, they’re gonna come back [to safety]. Therefore, they’re practicing trust.”
They trust you, and you helped them learn how to use the Halo Collar, so they will instinctively trust the collar. The fact that the collar’s feedback works perfectly with their instincts makes it all the more practical.
Cesar tells us that “Trust, respect, and love are the pillars of any relationship.”
Once you and your pup complete the Halo Training Program, you will have formed a bond rich with trust, respect, and love that will last you a lifetime.

1 What is an e-collar?
The
Electronic Dog Collar (sometimes referred to as an electric collar) is an advanced training device that is completely safe and does not harm the animal when used correctly. Electronic training collars are popular with professional cynologists all over the world, they have their supporters and opponents. It is very important to choose the right training collar and learn how to use it in the best possible way.
Each device can be harmful if used incorrectly, inadvertently, and if the instructions are not followed. The same applies to electronic dog collars.
-
2 How does an e-collar work?
- The e-collar works on the basis of discharges that are unpleasant for the dog, but not life-threatening. Every experienced breeder knows that it is impossible to raise a dog without admonishment or physical punishment. Instead of slaps on the ass, you can use electronic collars. You will appreciate it, for example, when the dog starts to run away and does not respond to your calls, because the electronic collar can be controlled remotely. E-collars are being bought by more and more responsible dog owners who know that a naughty and ill-mannered dog can cause a lot of problems, and ultimately can harm itself.
-
3 How can an e-collar help me?
Even when walking without a leash, the dog will obey your command (“stop”, “to me”, “to the leg”) and will also help you to wean the dog from pulling on the leash, running after other dogs or people.
To interrupt the dog’s unwanted activities (“fu”, “no”) – unlearn bad habits during daily coexistence with people, for example, do not take food from the table, do not jump on people, do not dig, do not eat excrement, do not simply bark so, howl..
Will help with training. The dog must follow all the commands accurately and correctly, as if it were on a leash (hundreds of meters in length!), and now there is no need to wear a leash and the dog knows this very well, so he adapts his behavior.
-
4 Are e-collars safe?
Electronic collars were investigated by the Central Commission for Animal Welfare, which said: “The so-called electronic collars have undergone rapid technical development over the past 8-10 years, and now they have almost nothing in common with their predecessors, which used a much greater intensity of electric current and needed In the interest of animal welfare and the unification of standards, the International Electronic Collar Association (ECMA) has been established to deal with this issue in depth and provide expert education in addition to its own research.
ECMA are fully committed to animal welfare, and their use in many cases is helping to replace some of the traditional dog training methods that can be far less considerate to animals.”
-
5 When should I start using an e-collar?
Electronic collars are recommended for use from 6 months. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Choose an appropriate pulse rate (the dog should respond to the impulse, but on the other hand, it should not be too painful for the dog – for example, the dog’s sobbing, etc.). Collars usually offer different levels of warning (beep, vibrate, pulse). The dog very quickly begins to understand the sequence of signals, so soon you can already start using only sound, or vibration.
6 What features does the collar offer?
The more features the collar offers, the more control the dog has. The most important, as well as the main functions that a collar should have are an audible alert and an electrostatic pulse.
The main models of electric collars are supplemented with a vibration function. Quite often, these functions are extended with additional functions. The main functions of the collars are as follows:
Audible alarm: An audible signal must always precede an electrostatic pulse. The dog will quickly learn that the unpleasant electrostatic impulse is preceded by a sound, and therefore will begin to react only to the sound. In practice, this is the most commonly used function.
Vibration : Usually used as an intermediate step between an audible warning and an electrostatic pulse in case the dog does not respond to the audible signal. Vibration intensity can usually be set at several levels. With vibrating collars, vibration is the main function, but the effectiveness of such collars is limited and is more suitable for small and calm dogs.
Electrostatic Pulse: Serves as an impulse correction and is used when the audible warning and vibration fail.
For best efficiency, the pulse intensity must be controlled.
Spray: This is a kind of corrective signal, when a spray is used to correct the dog’s behavior, which, when the corresponding button is pressed, is sprayed onto the dog’s nose. This is the second most effective and painless correction method on the market.
Booster : This is an emergency button that delivers higher pulse power. Most often used in crisis situations. The maximum value is usually set by the manufacturer, but sometimes you can program it yourself.
Light : This function has several options. Often this is a flashlight on the remote control or a laser “pointer”. The best solution is an LED located on the receiver that illuminates remotely using the remote control. This will enable you to see in the dark where your dog is.
Anti-bark mode: Some e-collars have a built-in anti-bark mode that automatically detects and prevents unwanted barking and howling of the dog.
If the dog starts barking, the collar will activate and warn the dog with a beep or vibration. If the barking continues, the dog receives a corrective impulse, which can be in the form of a spray or an electrostatic impulse.
-
7 For What sizes and breeds of dogs can the electric collar be used for?
A very important factor in choosing an effective electronic training collar is the size and breed of your dog. If your dog’s weight is approximately 5 to 50 kg, then almost all collars will be effective. The problem with selection, however, comes when your dog is a mini-breed, or vice versa, a very large breed. On small breeds, the pulse may be too strong or the receiver may be too large. For large breeds, the collar may not be effective enough. If your dog’s weight is at the upper weight limit for using a collar, or your dog has a low pain threshold (usually fighting breeds), then it’s best to buy a collar that has enough power reserve.
In crisis situations (with the instinctive behavior of the dog), it is necessary to provide for the use of a stronger correction than with normal use of the collar.
-
8 Which to choose the range of the collar?
Another important feature when choosing a collar is the working distance. The typical range of collars is from 200 to 4000 meters. If you cannot decide which one to choose, then the following factors must be taken into account when choosing: location and terrain. If you often move in rough terrain (for example, in a forest), then it is advisable to choose a training collar with a longer range. The range of the collars is given under ideal conditions, i.e. on a plane without obstacles. In densely wooded areas, the range is significantly reduced (due to the propagation properties of radio waves). How to use: A larger range is necessary for a hunter in the forest or an owner whose dog constantly runs away into the forest.
For normal use, a collar with a range of up to 350m is very suitable.
-
9 Waterproof collars?
Another very important property is water resistance. The most commonly encountered water resistance is: Without protection – the receiver is not protected from water and must be stored in a dry place. Waterproof – the receiver is only resistant to weather conditions (snow, rain) Waterproof: the receiver is resistant to humid environments and can be immersed in water.
-
10 How and what do the collars feed on?
Collar power supply is a very important factor when choosing a model, which definitely should not be neglected. Cheaper models of training collars are most often powered by a conventional 3V, 6V or 9V battery. The cost of these batteries is approximately 50 to 150 kroons, and therefore it is advisable to take into account when choosing a collar and operating costs, which can reach several hundred per year.
Some training collars use non-standard batteries that are hard to find or are only sold by the collar manufacturer or retailer. For this reason, we recommend buying collars that have a built-in battery that can be easily recharged using a USB cable or mains.
-
11 Is the collar easy to manage?
To use the collar effectively, it is also important to learn how to use it. The simpler the control, the more convenient, more flexible and, therefore, more efficient its use. The most convenient option is when a separate button is provided for each function. This eliminates annoying switching between functions. Collars with this control are suitable for all kinds of activities, especially for a dog who likes to run away quickly, when you need to react very quickly and call the dog before he runs out of the range of the collar.

Everyone who ever tried to teach his dog something, faced with the fact that he behaves well only as long as he is next to the owner, and as soon as he is released to run free, he literally breaks off the leash. Neither shouts, nor promises of all sorts of punishments help – the dog felt freemen and does not obey at all. And then, when he still manages to be taken on a leash, he no longer understands why he is scolded, because the mind of dogs is arranged in such a way that it is difficult for them to connect cause and effect if they have a spread in time.
The electronic collar solves this problem. It is a device with which you can remotely send weak electrical impulses. They can create discomfort, and then play the role of punishment (for example, if the dog tends to pick up leftovers on the street), or they can look like just a painless effect, designed only to attract the dog’s attention to the owner.
It is very convenient when working with a dog at a distance, training (including a circus one), managing guard dogs, and just for controlling too active four-legged friends when they walk without a leash.

How to choose an e-collar for dogs
First you need to clearly understand why you want to buy an electronic collar. As a rule, they are used: for remote training, for remote control of a dog (for example, on a hunt), to limit its movement (the so-called “electronic fence”, when the collar gives a signal when the dog is removed at a certain distance), to track the dog in the dark (LED) and for weaning a pet from unreasonable barking (anti-barking system).
When choosing a collar, it is necessary to take into account the individual characteristics of the dog: its size, breed, emotionality, pain threshold. It is clear that the Russian Toy and the Caucasian Shepherd Dog will need collars not only different in size, but also in intensity of impact, since the former are easily excitable and sensitive, and the collar can be stressful for them, while the latter are designed for battles with wolves, have thick hair and low sensitivity, and a weak discharge of current or vibration, they may simply not feel and, accordingly, not react in any way.
And, of course, you should not abuse such devices. Just try to become an authority for your dog, and then she will be happy to obey you and reckon with you without any electronic collars.

Question:
There is an opinion that the use of electronic collars is inhumane.
What can you say about this?
Answer:
– Actually, you need to understand what kind of collar we are talking about. “Electronic collar” is a very broad concept, and the device is not always used to punish a dog for misbehavior. But even in this case, the effect of the current is very short-term, and its strength is severely limited so as not to harm the health of the dog. But by the way, some collars can even produce impulses that are pleasant for the dog – this is convenient for rewarding at a distance. Of course, not a single company will now produce electronic collars with which you can torture animals, this is now strictly regulated.
And besides, not all electronic collars work only with current. There are ultrasonic and vibrating modes, and there are those that only track the location of the dog using GPS

Question:
Which dogs are suitable for an electronic collar?
