A very cool project with an unfortunate acronym, LIAR [in trans. “liar”] or Living Architecture develops building bricks that can extract a resource from sunlight, sewage and air. Bricks can be connected to each other and create a “bioreactor wall”, which could then be used in residential construction, public buildings or office space.

06.2015 23:29 India’s brick industry has over 100,000 kilns and produces up to 2 billion bricks annually, making it the largest source of pollution. Huge amounts of coal and diesel fuel are used to heat the furnace up to the right temperature, and the consequences of this process are horrendous: poor working conditions, lots of emissions and a thick layer of particulate matter everywhere. 9

Most of the building blocks in use today, including the ubiquitous cinder block, are made from a mixture of sand and gravel with Portland cement, an infamous helper in keeping the world’s carbon dioxide emissions high.
Limestone must be heated to 1482°C to produce cement, and this requires the burning of huge amounts of fossil fuels.
Add to that the energy needed to turn huge rocks into fine gravel and you have an incredibly large carbon footprint.

Our world is not yet conceivable without paper. Its production takes a huge amount of trees, in addition, it is accompanied by considerable waste. Recycling this waste will make more efficient use of wood and reduce the burden on the environment.
The latest study by Spanish scientists proves that waste from the paper industry can become a valuable raw material and generate income. The results of the work of scientists from the Polytechnic School of Linares and the University of Jaen are published in the journal Fuel Processing Technology.

The production of building materials releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which, as we know, is a greenhouse gas. Brick remains one of the main and most common building materials, which is called in dictionaries nothing more than “artificial stone of the correct form.” About 1350 billion bricks are produced annually worldwide. In their manufacture, the process of drying and firing is necessary; to complete the firing, it is necessary to reach a temperature in the furnace of about 1000 degrees Celsius. As a result, during these technological processes, about half a kilogram of CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere per brick.
If we calculate the total amount of this greenhouse gas, we get a huge figure, and quantitatively the volume of these emissions will exceed the amount of CO2 that is emitted into the atmosphere by all the aircraft in the world. It is said that the search for breakthrough technologies is carried out by people who either have a wide range of vital interests or are generalists. Architecture professor Krieg Dosier combines both broad-mindedness and a wide range of specialist knowledge. Back in her architecture studies, Craig threw away everything she owned in order to get off the consumer treadmill, she says. After graduating from Auburn University College in Auburn, Alabama, USA, Craig studied chemistry for four years and received her Master of Architecture in 2005. She then served as a visiting professor at North Carolina State University. She currently works at the American University of Sharjah, which is located in the United Arab Emirates. Here Craig is engaged in research work and the search for such an interdisciplinary approach that will allow inventing a technology for creating building materials that would not pose a danger to the environment.
