Cost for mice extermination: How Much Does a Mice Exterminator Cost? (2023)

How Much Does a Mice Exterminator Cost? (2023)

Mice are notorious for infesting homes, especially when outside temperatures drop during fall and winter. In this article, we present the costs for both DIY and professional solutions and provide some tips for hiring the right pest control company for you and your home.

Average Mice Extermination Cost

A full-service professional visit, which usually includes an inspection, treatment, and exclusion—that is, preventing mice from returning—usually ranges from $200–$600. However, an especially large or troublesome rodent infestation might cost more than $1,000 to treat.*

In addition to targeted treatments, pest control companies typically offer general treatment plans for mice and several other common pests. Here are the costs to expect:

  • One-time treatment: $250**
  • Annual plan (monthly or semi-monthly treatments): $100–$250 for the initial visit; $50–$150 for each follow-up treatment

*All cost data in this article was sourced from HomeAdvisor unless otherwise specified.

**One-time treatment costs were sourced from online quotes we requested from Terminix. This cost is for a general pest treatment and does not include rodent exclusion fees.

Factors That Affect Mice Extermination Pricing

Here are the primary factors that determine mice extermination pricing:

  • Infestation size: A large mice infestation requires more intensive pest control treatments. Pricing for controlling a small mice infestation typically starts at around $200; a severe infestation may cost as much as $600 to treat. You should also expect rodent exclusion services to require more time and labor for a severe infestation. Rodent exclusion is the process of sealing mouse entry points throughout your home.
  • Infestation location: If the mice have nested in your yard, shed, or other occupied room of the house, the cost to remove them will be lower. However, nests in hard-to-reach places like ceilings, attics, basements, and foundations will typically be pricier to remove.
  • Use of live traps: Despite being reusable, live traps cost five to 10 times more than traditional snap traps. This may be reflected in your service cost. Live trapping may also include travel fees for relocating the mice.

DIY Mouse Removal

If you notice occasional mice activity in your home but see little evidence of a larger infestation, DIY mouse removal may be a good option. You can purchase traps or poison baits from many popular retailers, such as Lowes, Walmart, or The Home Depot.

The table below compares several types of DIY mice control options, their respective costs, and what to expect when using them:

Type of Trap How It Works Price* Effectiveness and Experience Humaneness
Snap traps With this type of trap, a metal bar breaks a mouse’s neck $2.48 (pack of four traps) Effective for small infestations and reusable but sometimes result in a messy cleanup Kills mice quickly and is considered one of the more humane options
Glue traps This type of trap keeps a mouse in place until it starves or becomes dehydrated $4. 98 (pack of four traps) Disposable design that is effective for small infestations Kills mice slowly and is considered inhumane by many
Live traps These traps capture live mice for later release $14.20 (pack of two traps) Effective but requires frequent monitoring and traveling a short distance to release the live mice Is a humane, non-lethal pest control option
Bait stations These traps poison mice $12.98 (one trap with 20 bait refills) Highly effective but a potential safety hazard for pets that find the poison or consume the poisoned mice Is among the more inhumane options, killing mice slowly by preventing their blood from clotting
Electronic traps These traps electrocute mice $24.98 (one trap) Effective for small infestations and kill mice quickly Has disputed humaneness, killing mice quickly but not without pain

Hiring an Exterminator

DIY pest control can be effective, but hiring a professional exterminator is the most reliable way to manage your mouse infestation. Nearly 50% of respondents from our 2022 consumer survey said they went on to hire an exterminator after trying DIY methods.

Using an Exterminator

Consider contacting a pest control company when DIY methods have fallen short of resolving your mouse problem. If you have a severe infestation from the outset, you should contact an exterminator as a first course of action. Professional exterminators have undergone training in the safe handling of pesticides and are knowledgeable about identifying mouse entry points in a home.

This is what the process looks like for most professional exterminators:

  1. After contacting a pest control professional, the company will send a specialist to your home to evaluate the nature and scope of the infestation.
  2. Your pest control professional will advise you on their recommended treatments. This may include trapping, baiting, and applying repellents. They may also recommend rodent exclusion services to seal entryways and prevent recurring infestations.
  3. The exterminator will perform the pest control services on the scheduled date. If you signed up for an ongoing pest control plan, your home will receive follow-up treatments several times throughout the year.

Questions To Ask a Mice Exterminator

Pest extermination can protect your home and provide peace of mind when performed properly. But with the application of pesticides, there are inherent risks to your home and health. That’s why it’s important to hire a reputable professional. Here are some questions to ask when choosing a rodent control service:

Is your company licensed and insured?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has enacted strict certification requirements that pest control professionals must meet to operate legally. Individual states may impose additional requirements that can typically be found through each state’s Department of Agriculture website.

How much experience do your technicians have with removing mice?

Training and experience with treating specific pests speaks volumes about a pest control professional’s ability to do the job right. We recommend asking the company about its level of experience with mice extermination before signing a contract.

Will you provide a written estimate? Do you honor your estimates?

A written estimate provides a full breakdown of the charges to expect for your pest control service. Read the estimate carefully and ask questions about any fine print to ensure the initial estimate will not change on the day of your service.

Can you identify the location of the mouse infestation?

Exclusion is an important part of a comprehensive rodent extermination service. Your pest control technician should identify the location of the mouse infestation and provide a strategy for blocking the mice from reentering the home.

Are the products or traps that you use safe for pets and/or children?

Any reputable pest control provider should prioritize the safety of its customers. Ask about the risks associated with the proposed pest management plan and what precautions your provider will take to keep you and your family protected.

Do you offer a service guarantee? If so, how long does it last?

Many reputable pest control providers back their services with satisfaction guarantees. This may include a full refund for unsatisfactory service or free reservice for recurring infestations.

Our Conclusion

Professional mouse extermination will generally cost between $200 and $600. Your final pricing will depend on factors such as the infestation severity, recommended treatments, and accessibility of infested areas in your home.

Mouse Exterminator Cost

By Infestation Size

If the pest control technician is able to determine the size of the infestation, this will have a bearing on the cost of the mice elimination.

  • Small: $200 to $400
  • Medium: $1,000 to $1,200
  • Large: $1,500 to $2,500

By Type of Property

Size and type of property determine the cost of mouse extermination.

1,000 – 2,000 square feet $200 – $400
2,000 – 3,000 square feet $400 – $700
3,000 – 4,000 square feet $700 – $1,000
4,000 – 5,000 square feet $1,000 – $1,200

By Method

Mouse traps $300 – $700
Poison $350 – $650
Bait stations $500 – $700
Fumigation $2,500 – $7,000

By Frequency

While entering into a pest control contract is an ongoing cost for a homeowner, it does ensure regular visits from pest control technicians. The cost of the contract on a pro-rata basis decreases as the number of visits increases. A transferable pest control contract is an important part of selling or buying a house.

1 $250 – $500 $250 – $500
4 $500 – $1,000 $125 – $250
12 $900 – $1,300 $75 – $110
Average Cost $1,150
Highest Cost $2,000
Lowest Cost $300

5 Factors That Impact Mice Extermination Costs

Inspection

Many pest control companies offer a free inspection. If not, the cost of the inspection should be factored into the overall cost.

Property

The size and complexity of the house, and whether additional structures need to be treated, have a direct impact on the cost of mice extermination.

Severity

Larger infestations of mice will drive up the cost of extermination since all mice need to be eliminated for the job to be complete. Even leaving behind two mice, one male and one female, is enough to produce a fresh litterin four to eight weeks.

Exclusion

Once the mice within the house have been eliminated, others need to be excluded from re-entering the home. The number and types of entry points will impact mice extermination costs.

Location

When the home is located in an area with many mice, whether wooded or urban, the severity of the problem and the need for more callbacks will affect the cost.

DIY Mouse Removal vs. Exterminator

Deciding whether to remove the mice by yourself or to hire a professional to exterminate the mice, greatly affects the cost since DIY supplies are relatively inexpensive.

Though DIY mouse removal saves on costs, it may not be as effective as professional pest control services. It’s also important to remember that multiple mouse traps need to be deployed—not just a few.

Description Paper traps embedded with a super-sticky gel-like glue hold the mouse in place until it dies The classic snap mousetrap instantly kills the mouse with a spring-loaded arm Plastic cage-like humane live traps capture the mouse for later release
Cost $15 to $20 for 36 traps $10 to $15 for 20 $150 for 10 traps
Humane? No Possibly yes, if well-designed Yes

Mice Removal vs.

Extermination Costs

Exterminating the mice within the home will cost around $500 to $600. Humanely trapping live mice costs slightly less than extermination, at around $300 to $600.

Mice Removal Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Most humane method
  • Dead mice not left in walls or ceiling
  • Avoids poisons in the home

Cons

  • Not always complete
  • Can take longer
  • More follow-ups required

3 Humane Options for Treating a Mice Infestation

Many homeowners prefer to trap and release insects found in their homes, so why not mice, too? When the goal is rodent removal rather than rodent extermination, there are a number of options.

Odors

Cotton balls permeated with peppermint oil, cayenne pepper or clove oil and left in areas frequented by mice can help to repel them.

Obstacles

Though it seems like mice can gnaw through anything, steel wool presents a strong obstacle for them. Stuff suspected mouse holes with steel wool to keep out the intruders.

Traps

Smear peanut butter at the bottom of a bucket with steep sides. Place a book over the top, leaving a 3/4-inch gap on the side. Then, build a staircase of old newspapers or books to the top. The mouse should fall into the bucket when attracted by the food.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I know if I have mice or rats?

If you happen to see a rodent, it’s easy to tell the difference between a mouse and a rat. A mouse is about 2 to 4 inches long, has a pointed nose and its tail is about the same length as its body. A rat is about 7 to 10 inches long, has a blunt nose and its tail is shorter than its body.

Mouse droppings are small pellets about 1/4-inch in diameter. Rat droppings are about 3/4-inch long. Both leave tracks exhibiting four toes on the front feet and five toes on the back, but only rats will leave tail marks, as well.

How much does mice inspection cost?

Many pest control companies offer a free mice inspection. When companies do charge for inspection, the cost is generally $100 to $250.

Do mice carry diseases?

Yes, mice, rats and other rodents carry diseases. Diseases can be transmitted by rodent droppings, urine or saliva.

How long does it take to exterminate mice?

After the exterminator has visited the home, it usually takes between one and three months for the mice to be eliminated.

How frequently should a mouse exterminator visit?

After the first visit from the mouse exterminator, the follow-up visit should be about two to four weeks later. After that, the exterminator should visit quarterly, or around every three months.

How can I tell if I have a mouse infestation?

Other than direct rodent sightings, you can tell if your home has a mouse infestation by mouse droppings, gnawed wires or furniture, the sound of mice running in walls or ceilings and by shredded fibrous materials (insulation, clothing, etc.) indicating that the mouse is trying to nest.

Every person dreams of a comfortable life, but can it be so if there are mice in the apartment? These are the rodents that spoil clothes, furniture, food and are carriers of infectious diseases. You can, of course, put a few mousetraps, but this is unlikely to solve the current problem. Since some rodents will be replaced by others, here, to fight mice, you need to use another method – deratization. Thanks to such actions, you can get rid of mice, while the cost of services is not very high and affordable for any consumer.

Simply put, rodent control is a way to control mice and other rodents. Deratization is divided into two types:
● prophylactic. Since the purpose of this method is to create conditions that would not allow rodents to enter the premises, the prices for the destruction of mice by this method are relatively low. For the most part, an employee of the company provides the customer with high-quality advice, using which he will be able to remove rodents from his premises;
● Fighter. The name “fighter” speaks for itself. Here it is allowed to use all methods (permitted by the relevant authorities) that would help to completely exterminate rodents. Although there are “old-fashioned” methods for the destruction of mice, the chemical method of deratization is most in demand. Using this method, the performer uses expensive and high-quality drugs, so the prices for killing mice in an apartment in this way will be far from low.

It is also important to note that in addition to the “extermination” of mice, our company is ready to provide its services for the destruction of:
● bedbugs;
● pincers;
● mosquitoes;
● cockroaches, etc.
The prices shown in the table may change over time and may be different for each consumer. The cost of services is affected by the size of the premises, the distance and the means used. Good discounts and bonuses are sometimes possible.

  • Insect control
  • Rat Extermination

Extermination of mice in Perm – the price of deratization areas. These rodents are capable of delivering big problems to people:

    • Gnaw electrical wires and cause a short circuit.
    • Damage to furniture, interior items.
    • Spread severe diseases such as plague, tularemia, rabies, etc.
    • Destroy food and crops.

Fighting mice on your own often does not bring effective results. Poisons and traps available in stores do not lead to the death of all rodents and do not allow them to be completely eliminated, and the remaining individuals quickly restore the population. At the first detection of traces of small pests, we recommend getting rid of them as soon as possible and calling the workers of the sanitary organization.

Employees of Glavdeztsentr will help exterminate mice with the help of professional equipment and potent drugs.

You can: order a call, place an application for calling a pest control or get a calculation of the cost of processing from rodents by phone +7 (3852) 59-08-05 in Barnaul. Actual prices for private traders and organizations see in the “Cost” section.

    Rodent control methods

Derat control products are safe for humans and pets, but deadly for mice. We use preparations of chemical and biological action for treatment against rodents. These funds are allowed to be used for the destruction of mice in children’s educational institutions and food industry enterprises.

The pesticides we use cause choking attacks in rodents, which encourages them to get out of their holes. Thanks to this, dead pests are easier to detect and prevent the spread of an unpleasant odor from the decaying corpses of mice.

It was impossible to eat spoiled food, definitely. Employees of “Glavdeztsentr” arrived within 1 hour, removed the litter, did a deep processing. Damaged products are disposed of. They sprayed a pesticide with a generator, destroyed the nests, issued a guarantee. I am infinitely grateful to you!

Shock! Mice have appeared in our trading floor! Imagine what it was like to see this disgrace to the buyers! Immediately, the senior employee of the hall called the sanitary organization. On the same day, we closed the store for processing. The premises in the warehouse were completely disinfected from mice and poisoned all rodents. Thanks to their help, our product and the reputation of the store was saved! Now we periodically order preventive treatment from them. We recommend the organization without fail!
