Traditional Scottish house by the sea in country style

Agree, it’s great to have a country house in Scotland, the windows of which overlook the sea, to be able to listen to the surf and watch the sunset, sitting on the porch of your home surrounded by beautiful views of nature. It is to such a house that we will now go on an excursion to look inside, consider the design of the rooms and get an impression of how a dwelling located in such a picturesque place can be decorated.

Dinner in the fresh air with the sound of the waves and a light sea breeze? Easily, for this it is enough to install a dining group near the entrance to the house, so that it is easier to set the table, and serve dishes and you can start eating. Garden furniture made of wood, painted with white paint, looks incredibly contrasting against the backdrop of bright greenery, in such an environment even the most avid dieters will have an appetite.

But let’s start our tour of the house and go along the gravel path to the main entrance of this simple, at first glance, snow-white building with turquoise painted window frames and a tiled roof.

The first room we enter is a spacious living room. It should be noted that all rooms in this country house are decorated in a stylistic manner that combines elements of country style, minimalism and modern trends. The decoration of the rooms is the most classic approach to the design of a country dwelling – a combination of stone and wood finishes. Stone of various sizes and textures with light grout was chosen as the decoration of the accent wall in the living room. The main part of the walls is also made of natural material, but painted with white paint. So that the atmosphere of the room for the whole family is not too cool, a light-colored wood was used as a floor covering, warming with its natural warmth.

But it’s not just furniture and wood flooring that warm the atmosphere. An unusual fireplace-stove, which has become the undisputed focal point of the living room, is responsible for heating the room, in the truest sense of the word. Upholstered furniture with leather upholstery in a natural ocher shade is a practical and convenient choice for creating a recreation area for country households. The original woodpile, built into one of the walls near the fireplace, has become not only a necessary, functional piece of furniture, but also its unique decor. The scale of the spacious living room dictates the need to organize a lighting system on several levels at once. In addition to the lamps built into the false ceiling, there are also ceiling chandeliers in the center of the room and above the working area of the mini-study, which is an ensemble of a desk and a chair in a classic style.

Another living room, but more modest in size, is a relaxation area by the fireplace with a TV. We see the same techniques in the design of the surfaces of the room – light walls and ceiling, the use of natural stone to create an accent wall that highlights the TV area and wooden flooring. And again, an unusual but functional fireplace in black tones with the same attributes – a woodpile and firewood baskets.

Cozy upholstered sofas with a pleasant textured upholstery in a soft shade are a comfortable seating area for the living room, a soft pouffe that can serve as both a stand and a seat, completes the image of the soft zone and acts as its center. Despite the abundance of interior elements of rural life, the rooms of the entire household also contain modern decor items with a functional background. For example, a steel-colored arched floor lamp, by its very presence, organizes a reading corner in a cozy living room.

The next room we look at is the kitchen-dining room. Such spacious kitchens can only be afforded by suburban households. The kitchen can be accessed from the living room or from the backyard through large glass doors-windows. Thanks to the ensemble of ordinary and panoramic windows, there is always a lot of natural light in the kitchen-dining room and pleasant greenery outside the room. The decoration of the kitchen space differs from the decoration of other rooms of the household only in that here stone tiles were used for flooring, which is much more practical than a wooden floor board for a room with temperature changes and high humidity.

The traditional style of the kitchen set creates a cozy atmosphere of work areas, while providing the owners with all the necessary household appliances built into the furniture ensemble and work surfaces. The polished wood countertops of the kitchen island and kitchen worktops look great against the white background of the storage systems. Round handles made of the same material complete the look.

Located right here in this spacious kitchen, the dining area is simple and uncluttered. The massive dining group, which is a spacious wooden table and chairs with a bench made of the same type of wood, creates a cozy place for lunch and dinner with a hint of the charm of rural life.

On the second floor, in the attic room, there is a private room of the owners – a bedroom. The light finish of the ceiling and walls, using a combination of paint and slatted wall panels, goes well with the wood flooring. The decor of the bedroom is very minimalistic – a large bed, bedside tables with table lamps, a small chest of drawers and a folding wooden chair. Nothing in this room distracts from peace and tranquility. The room, designed for sleeping and relaxing, is decorated in accordance with its main functions.

The bedroom has access to a large bathroom. Not only a typical apartment can envy such a scale, but also most urban households. Despite the spaciousness and abundance of stone tiles in the decoration of the room, the bathroom does not seem cool, thanks to the use of warm natural shades.

A snow-white tub takes center stage in this spacious spa area. A set of two washbasins with mirrors above them completes the look of a comfortable, practical and at the same time aesthetically pleasing space.

For the Scots, the house has a special meaning. This is an ideal place where the whole family gathers, spend time alone with loved ones. In the atmosphere of the house, there should be a connection with the roots, the native land, and the interior should reflect the balance of “what is outside” and “what is inside.” Only in harmony with the history of his land, family and kind of Scot finds harmony with himself.

It is this philosophy that underpins the design of this contemporary house in the mountains of Northern Scotland, among green hills and mountain meadows. It is owned by a married couple, Frank Thompson and Joanna Metz, who love to come here with their children on vacation, and is a unique combination of tradition and modernity.

Huge panoramic windows, opening in all four directions, allow you to completely erase the boundary between the environment and the internal environment and fill the house with light and air. A carefully selected color palette, a combination of natural wood and glass helps to maintain this impression of lightness and “airiness”. “We chose this house because of its location and unique qualities,” the owners say. “For the fact that the medieval history of these places and avant-garde design are combined here.”

The choice of furniture contributes to this impression in many respects: the architects chose products from the Italian brand Lago for the furnishings, the “floating” forms of which do not visually overload the space. In the living room, this is, first of all, the floor-to-ceiling Air shelving unit: its weightless wood and glass structure serves as a partition, zoning the room and separating the living area from the dining area.

The kitchen stands out for its functionality and discreet beauty. In the center stands a sculptural island resembling a piece of modern art, with gold-tone metallic finishes that play and glisten beautifully in the sun. The simple, minimalist forms of the Lago XGlass 36e8 kitchen harmoniously echo the laconic landscape outside the window.

The bedrooms share the same minimalist, understated aesthetic as the rest of the house. Panoramic windows, simple, light and “airy” design, natural materials – all this allows you to create an atmosphere of peace, tranquility and harmony. In Frank and Joanna’s bedroom, the Fluttua bed is complemented by a large wardrobe in neutral taupe. In the master’s daughter’s bedroom, the same laconic aesthetic is “diluted” with brighter colors of the blue palette, energizing in the morning and setting in a positive mood.
