This Char-Broil grill heated quickly and evenly in our tests and didn’t flare up once, which makes it great for beginners. It turned on with no effort at all and got hot enough to sear steak and chicken without burning them. This model features Char-Broil’s Tru-Infrared technology, which is basically a large metal plate that sits below the cooking grates and traps the food’s juices as it cooks. Once the juices hit the plate, they steam and infuse the food with more flavor. This design also helps prevent flare-ups since the burners themselves are shielded. Results were juicy and not dry, though some testers missed the charring from the direct flame.
In addition to the Char-Broil’s cooking performance, we liked the simple, two-knob design that quickly responded to adjustments. When you’re done cooking, the entire grill is easy to move and store away.

For locations that may not allow a traditional outdoor grill, this Weber electric grill is the next best thing. Simply plug it in and turn it to the desired temperature using the digital precision temperature control. It works with the Weber Connect App to remotely monitor the grill and food temperatures. It also has dual cooking zones to simultaneously grill two different foods at different temperatures. Take note that you’ll need to wait for it to preheat, but thanks to the digital thermometer, you’ll know exactly when it reaches the right temperature. It can be used as a tabletop grill or with a grill cart (sold separately), and the control panel comes off so it can be stored in a case indoors while the rest of the grill can remain outside.
In our tests, we found the grill to be easy to use, and it cooked a strip steak with beautiful sear marks to 145ºF in about 8 minutes. Chicken thighs came out juicy and golden, too, in under 30 minutes.

The folding side shelves offered ample space to store trays, and the gas tank and grease tray were easy to access. The small footprint and lightweight construction of the grill made it easy to roll away for storage. This portable grill is good enough to stand in as your full-time grill. It has a solid and sturdy build that can stay put year-round, but it’s still easy enough to fold up and light enough to roll around. We love that it has a latch that locks the lid in place when it’s in the folded position for easier movement. It has a porcelain-enameled cast iron grate that can fit up to 15 burgers and reaches full heat in less than 10 minutes.
In our tests, steak and chicken got beautiful sear marks, and we didn’t experience any flare-ups. It lights with the press of an igniter button and uses a one-pound propane tank (or you can purchase an adaptor hose that allows it to be used with a full-size propane tank). It uses a disposable drip tray, which isn’t common among the portable grills we tested and makes cleanup easy.

Pellet grills are excellent for slow-cooking meats, fish and veggies at low temperatures using smoke. This one from Traeger is one of the brand’s most popular models. It’s made from heavy-duty stainless steel and feels as sturdy as it looks. It has a temperature range from 165ºF to 500ºF, and you can program it right from the control panel or from the connected app that monitors the entire cooking process.
In our tests, it made some of the best brisket we’ve ever tasted; it cooked overnight and turned out juicy with a good bend that didn’t fall apart (the sign of a good brisket that’s tender but not overcooked). It also made fall-off-the-bone ribs and tender chicken. Compared to other pellet grills we tested, it seemed to cook gently and consistently. None of the foods we cooked ended up too soft or dry.

How we test grills
In the Good Housekeeping Institute, we’ve tested more than 80 grills since 2011, including gas grills, charcoal grills, Kamado grills, pellet grills, electric grills and portable grills. (And that number doesn’t even include indoor grills!) To determine which new grills to test, we first scour the internet and popular retailers for newcomers, keep our eyes peeled at industry trade shows like CES and the Builder’s Show and communicate with brands to learn about their latest models and innovations. From there, we request samples to test and either put them together ourselves or hire an outside company to help. When we assemble the grills ourselves, we take notes on how easy or hard it is and record how long it takes, but we don’t score the process since it’s easy enough to buy grills pre-assembled (which we recommend!) and everyone’s skill level (and patience level) is different.
When we test grills, we assess performance and ease of use. For gas grills, we cover the surface with sliced white bread to determine how evenly the grill distributes heat. We cook steak and chicken to evaluate how quickly they cook with the least amount of flare-ups. We cook steak and chicken on charcoal grills as well, but we weigh ease of use more heavily since it’s harder to control charcoal as a variable. When we test pellet grills, we cook steak, chicken and ribs.
In terms of ease of use, we value clear instructions, labeled parts and simple assembly. We also consider helpful accessories like shelves, side tables, tool holders, built-in thermometers, wheels, types of igniters and more. After we complete our testing, we compare all of our notes to determine which performed the best.
What to look for when buying the best grill
✔️ Fuel type: The first thing to consider is what type of grill you’d like. The two main types are gas and charcoal. Gas is easy to use while charcoal is trickier to master but delivers a smokier taste. There are also Kamado grills that use charcoal and pellet grills that use wood pellets. (More on the pros and cons of each below.)
✔️ Size: Once you narrow down the type of grill you’d like to buy, think of how much room you have to use and store it, as well as how many people you’re cooking for at a time. Three-burner gas grills are ideal for families of four or fewer but can still handle the occasional party. A 22-inch diameter is common for charcoal grills. If you don’t have a lot of room, consider a portable grill that’s typically much smaller but does the trick in terms of turning out a delicious meal.
✔️ Accessories: While side shelves and tool holders may not seem important, they make the overall grilling experience smoother. We also like shelves underneath the grill for storage, a quality set of wheels, tank holders for gas grills and more.

What type of grill is best?
When buying a new outdoor grill, the two biggest players are gas and charcoal, but electric, Kamado and pellet grills are also fair game. When selecting what type of grill to buy, consider how often you’ll be grilling, the amount of space you have for storage, what flavors you prefer and the amount of time and attention you’ll want to spend cooking. Here are the basics on each:
✔️ Gas grills are popular for good reason. They offer excellent temperature control, plus they ignite with the push of a button, heat up quickly and are easy to clean. It’s the go-to option for no-fuss grillers who plan to barbecue frequently. Just keep in mind that you’ll need fuel from a propane tank or natural gas line on your property.
✔️ Charcoal grills use briquettes or lump charcoal as fuel. Charcoal is more hands-on and takes time to heat up and cool down, but it imparts a better, smokier flavor than gas because it often gets hotter. It’s best for grilling purists.
✔️ Kamado grills use charcoal to heat but are often made of ceramic and have thicker walls than classic charcoal grills. They can reach very hot temperatures, like a pizza oven, and they retain heat well for low-and-slow smokes.
✔️ Electric grills plug in and can’t be beat for ease of use or convenience — especially grills that can be used indoors. Just don’t expect steaks or burgers cooked on an electric grill to taste like the ones from a real BBQ.
✔️ Pellet grills are a growing category. They use electricity and hardwood pellets made out of wood scraps to heat. Pellets provide a delicious, authentic hardwood flavor to food but can be costly.

Selecting the Right Grill
Despite the bevy of options, it’s not difficult to select the right grill as long as you think about what you want to cook, and how. If grilling a few hot dogs and hamburgers at the campsite is your goal, buy an inexpensive grill and spend your money elsewhere. But if you want to, say, grill seafood or smoke brisket, it makes sense to invest in a grill with the capacity to take you where you want to go.
No matter what kind of grill you have—gas, charcoal, or pellet—the most important thing is the being able to control the heat source. For charcoal grills, that means plenty of space for fuel and the ability to add more charcoal, raise and lower the cooking surface, or mound the charcoal up on one side for indirect cooking. For gas grills, you need two or more burners. For pellet grills, it’s a bit easier, because they have automated temperature control systems.

All of the grills we tested are mobile to one extent or another. However, if portability is a primary need, consider one of the portable grills we tested. They’re ideal for tailgating and do double duty to expand firepower beyond what your main grill can manage.

How We Tested
We grilled almost everything—swordfish, lobster, some kind of spicy Portuguese sausage, more steak than you could shake a pair of tongs at. We also grilled bone-in-chicken, hamburgers, vegetable skewers, and vegetable patties. Hot dogs? Sorry, we skipped those. No offense.
We ran these grills as hard as we run lawnmowers and power tools. We grilled in a blizzard. We grilled in the dampness of early spring, the smell of cold mud competing with brisket. We grilled in early summer, morning, noon, and night, dragging these contraptions in and out of a barn, running test after test. We grilled in a parking lot, on a picnic bench, even hauled a couple to sporting events.
To evaluate heat distribution, we covered each cooking surface with white bread. This is a seemingly unconventional choice for grill testing, but white bread is ideal because it clearly shows where cold spots might produce under-cooked food.

The Woodwind Wi-Fi 24 is an attractive, versatile grill that fits better in tight spaces due to its vertical legs and small footprint. During testing, we found it more convenient to maneuver and reposition where we had issues with other grills.
A nice propane-fueled griddle attaches to the side (hence its Sidekick name) and runs independently of the pellet grill controller. Heat distribution was even, as evidenced by our white-bread test. And the sear zone was perhaps the easiest to use, with a slide that pulls out to expose the center of the cooking grate to the direct heat of the flame.
The color LCD control screen allows you to set the temperature and the amount of smoke produced. (You can also do that on the grill’s app.) We appreciated all the features, but they add to the cost—the Woodwind Wi-Fi 24 runs $800 without the Sidekick.

With a temperature range of 150 to 700 degrees Fahrenheit, the 560 Digital Charcoal Grill is a multipurpose backyard cooker. Its innovative design stores charcoal in a vertical hopper on the end of the grill, where it is gravity-fed and burned from the bottom.
Flames and heat are drawn horizontally into the grill, where they enter a large diffuser and then rise to the grates. Temperature is maintained with a digital thermostat that controls the fan feeding air to the fire. Masterbuilt also has an app that pairs with the 560 so you can set and monitor the grill remotely. It comes with one temperature probe, but there are ports for three more.
Smoking in the 560 is as easy as setting the temperature and a timer. Using lump charcoal provides a smoky flavor, but if you need more smoke, you can add wood chips to the ash bucket, where they’ll burn slowly as embers fall on them.
On our first cook, a small brisket we had on for almost six hours at 220 degrees developed a fantastic crust—it was so easy, and so tasty. Grilling burgers, we set the temperature to 500. We found this to be a nice temp, between a sear and a slower cook, that gave our burgers a deep, brownish red color, with dark grill lines. Chicken on the bone cooked to perfection in about 40 minutes placed on the racks above the grill grates, away from the heat, and with the temp backed down to 400.
If you love the taste of charcoal-grilled food but cleaning up ash has held you back, Masterbuilt managed to take that hassle out of it. Due to the vertical hopper, the charcoal flows down as it burns, with the ash simply falling into a bucket at the bottom. Just open a door and empty the bucket—it’s that easy.

This somewhat simple, unassuming grill turned out to be the “sleeper” in our test. We were really impressed by how easy it was to grill with either direct or indirect heat. The charcoal tray is adjustable, hanging from a ladder rack that can quickly raise or lower the coals as needed.
The burgers we grilled had fantastic coloring and that trademark cooked-over-charcoal taste. To cook chicken slower, we shuffled the coals to one side, put the chicken on the other, and closed the lid. You can manage heat with the damper on top and monitor it with a large, easy-to-read thermometer. As far as portability, this table-top grill doesn’t break down to take up less space—what you see is what you get, and it might be difficult to transport in some smaller cars.
We were surprised to find that the Rambler is nearly 50 pounds. That might seem a tad heavy, but it has cast-iron grill grates and it’s fabricated from thick-gauge steel instead of cheap stamped sheet metal. It’s built to last. We just wouldn’t suggest hiking into the woods with it.

Like all of Oklahoma Joe’s grills we’ve tested, the Rider 900 DLX is built from noticeably heavier-gauge steel than many other brands, giving us the impression that they’re built to last. The Rider has some nice features we really appreciated due to the nature of our testing process. We frequently move grills around, set them up, clean them, and put them away. The Rider has solid rubber tires on its large wheels, making it very easy to move and to do so without a lot of noise. It also has a quick-release hopper bottom that allows all the pellets to drop into a bucket hanging below—super useful if you want to switch to different pellets. And the bucket has a sealable lid to keep pellets dry once removed.
The Rider is unique among the pellet grills we tested, with a large round sear zone in the center of the cast-iron cooking grate. A lever on the front of the grill body can be set to smoke, sear, or anywhere in between to get the heat right where you want it. With its new Cruise Gas Grill, Char-Broil takes temperature control to the next level. During testing, we found this worked great for things like chicken that you want to cook over a longer time.
The Cruise has porcelain-coated, cast-iron cooking grates, which we found were easier to clean off than plain cast iron. Below those grates are full-width heat diffusers; they helped distribute the warmth but also were less likely to flare up with grease drippings. Between the cast grates and heat diffusers, there’s a lot of material to warm up, which helps maintain an even heat.
