Arnold Schwarzenegger & Maria Shriver’s Longtime California Home is on the market at $11 million

Privately tucked away on a country lane that meanders off of Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles is a small community of 16 secluded homes that has attracted world-famous politicians, actors and industry leaders. One house on the sparsely populated lane was previously the home of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his then-wife, Maria Shriver.

Maria is a world-famous journalist and former host of several television news shows and the daughter of Eunice Kennedy and Sargent Shriver. The home is now being sold by its current owners, attorney-and author Maxwell Kennedy, who is the son of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, and his wife, Vicki Strauss Kennedy. It is priced at $11 million.

Nicely located on 1.75 acres between Will Rogers Historic Park and Rustic Canyon Creek, the 4,177-square-foot home, a mixture of New England and California-contemporary, was built in 1981. The neighborhood is zoned equestrian with a meandering, picturesque creek and several footbridges, riding and hiking trails.

The five-bedroom home has six baths, airy rooms with large windows and skylights, three fireplaces, a cheery kitchen and an adjoining family room. There is a sauna, spa, grotto-style pool and a lighted tennis court in a setting of ancient oak, sycamore and eucalyptus trees.

The home in L.A.’s Pacific Palisades neighborhood was the family home for Schwartzenegger and Shriver and their four children from 1986 until the couple split up after Maria discovered that Arnold had fathered a child with the family’s longtime maid. In 2013, the house was sold to Max and Vicki Kennedy for $12.9 million, keeping it somewhat in the Kennedy family.

Pacific Palisades has been a celebrity residential hotspot for decades, including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Dennis Quaid.

Matt Damon has lived there for years near his friend Ben Affleck but recently moved to New York’s cold winters, leaving Affleck behind to enjoy California’s sunny outdoor living.

The house is listed by Billy Rose and Santiago Arana of The Agency, Beverly Hills.

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 – After more than a year in office, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger still has not found a home in the capital city. He is holding out for a place with an easy commute and amenities appropriate to his ego and style.

And so, Mr. Schwarzenegger continues to split his week between Los Angeles and Sacramento, commuting by private jet. When in Sacramento, the governor stays at the Hyatt Hotel at a cost of $6,000 a month, paid for, until now, with campaign funds.

But state election law prohibits the practice after one year in office, which Mr. Schwarzenegger celebrated on Wednesday.

To have the governor of California living out of a steamer trunk, as rootless as a traveling brush salesman, is beneath the dignity of both the man and the office, some of his advisers say. To redress that, a nonprofit organization, the Governor’s Residence Foundation, is soliciting private donations to pay for Mr. Schwarzenegger’s accommodations while helping him find permanent housing.

“I think it’s embarrassing that the fifth-largest economy in the world can’t see fit to provide a residence for its chief executive,” said Tom Hiltachk, the governor’s lawyer and head of the foundation. “Especially when the law requires it.”

Mr. Schwarzenegger spends three days a week in Los Angeles with his wife, Maria Shriver, and four children, and four days a week in Sacramento, where he beds down in a 2,000-square-foot presidential suite with a panoramic view of the mall and a 90-second commute to his office across the street. He picks up his own room service check and the cost of the jet fuel.

Mr. Schwarzenegger says he likes the hotel, but the lack of a prestigious address for the most important state in the Union will never do.

“This is California, and we should have a really fantastic place where we can entertain world leaders,” Mr. Schwarzenegger said in a recent interview, describing imaginary grounds with a fountain, a circular driveway and hedgerows.

“It should have a room for dining and dancing and a place for after dinner,” he said. “We could invite world leaders like the chancellor of Germany or the prime minister of South Africa.”

California once had an official governor’s residence, a large white Italianate Victorian at 16th and H Streets in Sacramento. It was occupied by every governor from 1903 until shortly after Ronald Reagan took office in 1967.

Nancy Reagan refused to live there, insisting that the place was a firetrap. The Reagans instead rented a house in a suburban neighborhood that was owned by a friend and paid for by the state at a cost of $1,200 a month. In the meantime, Mrs. Reagan oversaw the building of a new governor’s mansion, an overblown ranch adjacent to an Indian burial ground in nearby Carmichael. By the time it was completed in 1975, the house had cost the state $1. 4 million and Mr. Reagan had moved out of town, having completed his second term. Joan Didion described it as “an enlarged version of a very common kind of California tract house, a monument not to colossal ego but a weird absence of ego.”

The next governor, Jerry Brown, spurned the gift, sniffing that the faux redwood, vinyl countertops, cinder-block walls slathered in adobe and suburban surroundings were not his style.

Governor Brown, a bachelor, opted to live in a downtown apartment for $250 a month. He slept on a mattress on the floor and paid the rent himself. The old Sacramento mansion, where his father, Gov. Edmund G. Brown, lived, is now a dilapidated museum in need of a roof.

“Nancy Reagan said it was a firetrap, but it’s no more a firetrap than any Victorian in San Francisco,” said the younger Mr. Brown, now mayor of Oakland. “It is a fabulous place right downtown. That’s where the governor belongs. It should be a living, breathing home for Schwarzenegger, Maria and their kids. “

No decision has been made on whether to buy a house, build one or refurbish the old mansion, Mr. Hiltachk said.

The Reagan mansion was sold to a private citizen in 1982 for $1.5 million, but no one has since used it as a permanent residence. Govs. George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson and Gray Davis all lived in the same 3,800-square-foot suburban home that was bought by a group of Mr. Deukmejian’s supporters and rented to the state for $1.

The Deukmejian foundation, wanting to get out of the real estate business, sold the house for $1.1 million, leaving Mr. Schwarzenegger the only homeless governor in the country.

The governor and his wife expressed interest in the 10,000-square-foot Reagan house, known as the Casa de los Gobernadores. Ms. Shriver visited the estate five times, the governor once, said Ross Davidson, a real estate broker who represented the owner. A contract was drawn up but never signed.

“Why would you take the job if you don’t want to live here?” asked Mr. Davidson, vexed that the Reagan house had been spurned once again. “You can’t camp out in a hotel for seven years.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s quest for a permanent home in the California state capital misstated the condition of the Old Governor’s Mansion in Sacramento. As part of other restorations, a new roof was completed in the mid-1990’s; it does not need one.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is still an example of unwavering will, motivating people to improve their bodies and achieve success in bodybuilding. Tengri Travel together with Aviata.kz decided to find out how to visit the places where the future Hollywood star began his path to fame.

Arnold Schwarzenegger – the man who made the catchphrase I’ll be back, actor, businessman, winner of a large number of bodybuilding awards and the 38th governor of California. He was born on July 30, 1947 in a small Austrian village called Thal in southern Austria near the city of Graz.

The inhabitants of this Austrian village are incredibly proud of this fact and try to emphasize it. Pointers, posters, a house-museum, a footpath in the shape of an iron Arnie’s head – everything says and reminds that this is the birthplace of a Hollywood star. In this village, he began to play sports and it was from here that he left for the world bodybuilding competition “Mr. Universe”, after which his dizzying career in the film industry began.

On July 30, 2011, a museum named after Arnold Schwarzenegger was opened in Tala in honor of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s birthday. It is located in the same house where Arnie was born and raised. The museum is under the personal patronage of the iron Arnie, and he insisted that the atmosphere of his childhood and youth be preserved in the house. Visitors to the museum can see the metal oven where Schwarzenegger’s mother used to cook his favorite apple strudel, and the old bread box, standing in the same place where it stood 50 years ago. In addition, the museum exhibits props from his films, such as a motorcycle from the movie “Terminator”, a sword from the movie “Conan the Barbarian”, as well as his first simple trainers and personal items. In front of the museum building there is a sculpture of Arnie the bodybuilder. Entrance to the museum costs about nine euros (about 4,000 tenge). The museum is located at: Linakstraße 9, 8051. It is open for visits from Monday to Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00.

Also be sure to visit the local lake: it was there that Arnold proposed to his wife Maria. And also take a look at the local square, where he once worked out in the fresh air, here you can see benches in the form of a barbell. Unfortunately, the gym, where the iron Arnie once trained, was demolished. The equipment, as reported by the Austrian media, was sold at a charity auction, the funds were directed to support the Paralympics.

Some Iron Arnie fans were able to visit his gym before it was demolished in 2014. According to them, he was at the address: Hüttenbrennergasse 31a, 8010 Graz, Austria. As of 2018, there was construction going on at the site. The first coach of the future Hollywood star was Kurt Marnul, then “Mr. Austria”. He noticed the potential in the young athlete and gave him the first instructions that put Schwarzenegger on the path to success.

As noted, in the Athletik Union Graz hall, located in the basement, there was equipment from the time of Schwarzenegger’s youth, the walls were decorated with his photographs. The gym was small and simple, but here, as Terminator fans note, great things were born. To get to the hall, Arnold in his youth traveled 20 kilometers from his small village, often on foot.

In addition to the origin of Arnold Schwarzenegger, this village is also famous for the unusual church of St. Jacob, built in the 18th century and expanded in the 1992 from an original design by the artist Ernst Fuchs, who is a representative of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. There is really plenty of fantastic in this church: unusual curved stone benches, an altar, a pulpit, the walls are made of iridescent crystalline glass, which symbolizes the Sea of ​​Galilee. The parishioners of this church positively assessed the new interior, people go to services, and, perhaps, the iron Arnie himself, coming from a very religious family, also went here on Sundays.

When visiting these parts, be sure to visit the city of Graz. Its old part is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This ancient city is the capital of Styria and the second largest city in Austria. During the reign of the Habsburgs, the residence of the emperors was located here.

Getting there

The village of Thal is located 200 kilometers from Vienna. This place can be reached by bus or by train with a change in Graz. You can also rent a car and travel on your own without being tied to a public transport schedule. The US Internal Revenue Service has released the seizure of the home of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, which was imposed on the object by mistake.
