The Power of Pinterest
If you need great ideas, check out options like Pinterest or the Houzz Ideabook. Use these websites to search the Internet for trending designs. For example, search for “Rustic Kitchen,” and Pinterest will show you hundreds of options like natural wood finishes or a farmhouse sink. Create a board like “Sinks and Faucets” or “Contemporary Kitchen” and “Pin” new images to your board. When you meet with your designer, you can share your Pinterest or Houzz inspiration pictures.
Scrapbooking
If you don’t want to surf the internet, think about a fun scrapbook. Scrapbook your favorite designs with your friends and family. Find stacks of magazines at the bookstore, library or thrift shop. Choose top magazines for kitchen and bathroom remodel ideas like Magnolia Journal, Architectural Digest, Better Homes and Gardens, Interior Design and House Beautiful. Snap quick pics of your neighbor’s kitchen on your phone and print. Glue fabric swatches, paint brochures and samples into your scrapbook. Bring the finished idea book to your first consultation.
Consider Your Family Needs & Accessibility
Talk with your family about what they need for your home. If you have children, include them in the process. Maybe they have a creative idea for a fun pet nook for your dog or want snacks to be in an easy-to-reach rollout cabinet drawer. Children will be excited to be a part of such a big project. If you live by a busy street perhaps you need to install roller shutters, which will provide sound insulation from the outside.
Do you need to consider aging parents or a family member with limited mobility? Consider accessibility when designing the kitchen or bathroom to accommodate them. You may want to install a curbless shower, adjust the kitchen layout, or remove barriers in your home. Elderly family members will benefit from wider doorways, low counters and pullout shelves. Have an honest discussion about their needs in your home.
This Waukesha bathroom was designed with accessibility in mind with a zero barrier walk-in shower.
Scope and House Size
Consider the scope of the remodel. The size of your home will affect the overall budget and timeline of the remodel. For instance, remodeling an old farmhouse requires more materials, labor and time overall. Some projects will take weeks, while others may take longer.
Talk with your designer about the difference between a full remodel or partial renovation. Do you need new cabinets, or do you plan on changing the entire layout? Would you like more storage or want a butler’s kitchen? Does your bathroom need to accommodate more people? Are you hoping to update an older bathroom with modern fixtures, Smart Home technology, and a custom shower with heated floors?

At Kowalske Kitchen & Bath, your designer create a full floor plan and 3D renderings to help you “see” your dream kitchen or bathroom. 3D rendering of a master bathroom.
Estimate
At Kowalske, we provide you with a remodeling estimate with three options (Good, Better and Best), giving you material choices that fit your budget. For example, you might want affordable laminate counters, the best in custom cabinetry, and a gorgeous backsplash. We will develop a detailed budget based on your wants. Keep in mind that the cost of remodeling is unique to each project based on the age of the home, size of the project, complexity, finish and other factors.
Always leave yourself a little bit of wiggle room for unexpected changes in the plans. For example, we may find an unknown pipe in a wall or faulty wiring during construction.

Step 3 – Hire a Remodeling Company
The last step in the planning process is to find a remodeling contractor. We recommend that you do your research.
- Read online reviews and ask your friends for referrals.
- Use the Milwaukee NARI contractor directory to find a trusted remodeling company.
- Ask the companies lots of questions about their process. How long will the project take? Do you provide a detailed calendar from day 1? Who will complete the work? What should I expect during construction? How do you control dust?
- Watch out for contractor fraud. If you base your decision on price alone, you might not get the quality you are seeking. If the contractor has immediate availability or the price seems too good to be true, these are red flags.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?
The whole process (planning, designing, ordering, scheduling, installing) can take anywhere from 3-6 months. Much of that time is invested before the actual work begins. Once the project starts, a typical kitchen remodel with Mountaineer Kitchens and Baths takes about 2-3 weeks to complete. Of course, material choices, the size of the job, and the complexity of the project all factor into the timing of a job.
What kind of tile do I want in my shower?
Every tile job is custom. This means that the sky is the limit when choosing a tile. At Mountaineer Kitchens and Baths we offer hundreds of different tile options to suit your personal style. Our designers specialize in finding the best products to fit your needs.
How can I get better lighting in my dark kitchen?
Mountaineer Kitchens and Baths offer many options for brightening a dark space. LED recessed lights are a great way to light the room itself; while undercabinet lighting is an outstanding option for task lighting. Decorative fixtures over the island or sink add a nice focal point to the room while adding additional light.
What is the most popular kitchen cabinet color?
While white is still our most popular color, grey paint and warm wood tones gaining ground. “Two tone” kitchens that use both stain and paint are very popular, as well.
How can I make sure my shower won’t leak?
At Mountaineer Kitchens and Baths, we use the Schluter Waterproofing System. Schluter®-Systems provides an integrated family of products in which the individual components collectively form a bonded, watertight assembly. The Schluter®-Shower System, which eliminates the risk of failures due to water and vapor penetration, dramatically reduces total installation time and is maintenance-free.
What is the most durable kitchen countertop?
At Mountaineer Kitchens and Baths, we offer natural and manufactured stone countertops. Natural stone (commonly referred to as Granite) is a durable, beautiful option with a budget friendly price tag. Manufactured stone (referred to as Quartz) is also durable and is maintenance free! Since quartz is a blend of synthetic resins and natural stone, it is more resistant to household cleaning chemicals and supplies than natural stone. Having a durable countertop is a lifelong investment and if you plan to sell your home at some point in the future, its value will be higher if you’ve used a durable countertop like quartz.
Do you do all the work yourselves?
Our crews are made up of Mountaineer Kitchens and Baths employees with many years of remodeling experience. To assist with projects we also utilize our trusted partners that will be used for multiple trades (electricians, plumbers).

what you can and cannot save on
We tell you how to renovate a bathroom on a budget, what materials to use and what you can save on
Photo: liloon/shutterstock
The bathroom is one of the most important places in the house. We are talking about hygiene, so it is necessary to make the room clean and tidy, without mold, fungus and broken tiles. However, not everyone can afford expensive repairs.
We tell you how to save money on bathroom remodeling without sacrificing quality and safety.
Walls
adv.rbc.ru
The most versatile and efficient way to finish wet areas is with tiles. In order not to go broke on wall decoration, it is best to choose a small square tile, as a large or rectangular version will cost more and create additional installation difficulties.
Among the advantages of using this material is a long service life. Even a cheap source with good care will last for decades. The tile is resistant to temperature extremes, which often occur in the bathroom. In addition, the material is practical: even if the surface is damaged, it is easy to replace the tile with another one without large-scale repairs.

Plumbing
Quality plumbing isn’t just available from popular brands. If you do not want to overpay for plumbing, then look at the budget counterparts of lesser-known brands. It’s not uncommon to find products that are just as good, but can save you about half your bathroom remodeling budget.
If you have a cast-iron bath at home, do not rush to throw it away. It can be upgraded with enamel or acrylic liner. The bath will look like new, and you will save on the dismantling and disposal of the old one. If you still decide to replace the bathroom, then it is better to give preference to the acrylic option: it heats up one and a half to two times faster than cast iron and will last an average of 20 years. If you want to install a shower cabin, then it is better to refuse additional functions: a rain shower, radio, massage nozzles. The simpler the shower, the cheaper it is.
Ceiling and floor
Budget renovation in the bathroom does not involve stretch and suspended ceilings, it is better to choose whitewash. To do this, you need putty, moisture-resistant paint and a primer, which you need to fix the result. You can use color: dark shades in a small room will visually make the ceiling higher. You can also trim the ceiling with plastic panels, this is a good way to hide all surface imperfections. But it is worth remembering that such a coating will eat a few centimeters of the ceiling – it will visually and physically become smaller.
It is better to use ceramic tiles as a floor covering, after laying a 3–5 cm thick screed to level the surface. But it is better to refuse linoleum as a budget option. Such material will not last long in dampness – mold may appear under it. And a few square meters of expensive moisture-resistant linoleum will cost the same as an inexpensive, but quite suitable tile.
Accessories
That’s where you can save the lion’s share of the budget. In fact, accessories are not directly related to repairs, so you don’t need to buy them all at once. It is not necessary to choose bathroom decor from one collection. You can combine elements from different styles and buy more of them as far as possible.
Decorative elements in the bathroom can be a play of colors and bright accents: a wall made in a different shade or with a pattern, colorful rugs or towels. The cheapest option is a bathtub curtain to keep water out of the floor. Properly selected pattern and color scheme will hide the flaws and emphasize the features of the bathroom.

Utilities and plumbing
Whatever your budget bathroom remodeling option, there are some things you shouldn’t skimp on. Before starting repairs, you need to check the pipes, as their improper condition can ruin not only your repair, but also the neighbors’ apartment. Cheap plastic from unknown manufacturers will leak and clog, so it is better to choose European or Russian brands with a good reputation. You can also reduce the cost of replacing pipes by opting for metal-plastic pipes.
Another important point in the renovation of the bathroom is providing access to all communications. It is necessary to correctly take into account the size of the box, behind which counters and taps with hot and cold water are hidden. Otherwise, if necessary, you will have to break the wall.
Waterproofing
Waterproofing is an essential part of a bathroom renovation. No finishing material guarantees complete protection against leaks, which can lead to mold, fungus and flooding of neighbors from below. Therefore, saving on security is not necessary.
Roll, coating and impregnating materials are used for waterproofing. In bathrooms, as a rule, coating waterproofing is made or combined with rolled waterproofing. At the same time, it is necessary to process the floor and walls: the ceiling does not need to be protected, since waterproofing in the apartment from above should prevent leaks.
Bathroom renovation by a private master
Bathroom renovation is perhaps the most expensive item in the estimated cost of an apartment overhaul and perhaps the most in demand. If you can overpower the repair of a room, a corridor or even a kitchen, somehow on your own, then not everyone will aim to finish the bathroom, everything is more difficult here, a lot of communications, water supply, sewerage, ventilation and power supply are concentrated here. It is certainly better to entrust a bathroom renovation to an experienced master, a professional will help you avoid problems both during the renovation and in subsequent years, so that everything is beautiful, functional and reliable. In addition, the bathroom is usually a rather small room, for this reason it is very difficult to create a truly functional and beautiful environment in it. The master must not only be a good tiler, but also have significant experience, have imagination and original design ideas.
Well, you finally decided to renovate the bathroom and toilet (bathroom).
Where to start?
For wall cladding, of course, the best solution would be the traditional ceramic tile , the market today offers us a huge selection of colors and sizes, for every taste, it is difficult to give advice in this matter, if you find something specific, go to the seller and make a preliminary calculation, many large retail outlets, having received from you the dimensions of your bathroom and bathroom, will easily and free of charge provide you with an express design project and help you calculate the right amount of tiles you like, suits, buy, cool tiles cannot be cheap, but vice versa easily . If you liked several samples and it is difficult to make a choice, pay attention to the size, for example, large tiles in a small bathroom will look awkward, and small glossy tiles will reflect light and thereby expand the space. Check the geometry of the tile, if there is a difference in size and whether it is large, fold the tiles face to face and look at the gap, if there is a “helicopter”, the better the plane, the better the “panel” will look on the wall. Read more about choosing a tile in this article.
Floor tiles are usually from the same collection and should not be too smooth, especially if there are elderly people or children in the house.
Floor heating in the bathroom…
well, everything is decided by whether you are ready to pay extra 150 – 200$ and no problem, you can buy a heating mat and 1 sq. m. m. and 1.5 sq.m, and more is usually not needed for our volumes, it is very comfortable, especially in winter, but keep in mind that it heats up for at least 30-40 minutes.
Ceiling.
Or tension, less often plastic, but most often prefabricated rack made of aluminum profile made in Russia, Germany, France, in various colors and shades with a flat and oval edge, with and without inserts. Lightweight, moisture resistant, fireproof and free of harmful emissions. I advise LED lamps, they do not require protection, they are almost eternal, with a power consumption of about 7 watts, they give excellent live light, a little expensive, but worth it.
Ventilation.
Bathroom The room is small, moreover, it is characterized by high humidity, so it is better to make ventilation in the bathroom forced. Fans are sleeve and bearing, bearing is quieter and more durable, the noise level is measured in decibels, choose the one with the lowest level. Air ducts, if necessary, we will buy together.
Bath.
Conditionally divided into cast iron, steel and acrylic – plastic, there are, of course, products made of artificial stone, cast marble, but this is less common, consider exclusive. A steel bath is such a budget option that it is not very popular among consumers, it is characterized by thin walls, is prone to deformation, and also “noises” during operation. Bathroom remodeling often involves the installation of a cast-iron bathtub. Strength, reliability and durability, these are the categories that can be used to characterize a cast-iron bath. Which manufacturer do you prefer? What can I say, Russia is reliable, cheap, but the enamel is so-so (sagging, bumps), the legs, as a rule, are not adjustable, and this is very inconvenient when you set the bath to the level, because we usually start tiling, it is from the bathroom. Asian manufacturers – better enamel, lighter, smaller bathtubs, legs are adjustable, but weak, usually an extra emphasis will not hurt, at a price more expensive than Russian ones, but cheaper than European ones. Europe is mainly Spain and France, the quality is equivalent, but France is a little more expensive, they are perfectly adjustable horizontally, and the legs even began to be fixed with galvanized clamps, which of course is more reliable.
Acrylic bathtubs. Acrylic, in truth, revolutionized the world of plumbing, appeared relatively recently, but it has become often used in bathroom decoration, the material is unique, plastic and allows you to realize any kind of design fantasies. They come with and without a metal frame, with a frame it is better, more reliable and, again, allows you to set it horizontally. Produced with various bells and whistles that require connection to the mains, preferably with a separate differential machine.
Shower enclosures.
There is also a huge variety of choices, China, as usual, rules)), but outwardly cute cheap models after a few months of operation do not look presentable, plastic doors turn yellow and it is not possible to restore the original appearance, while Europeans can choose worthy specimens , just keep in mind that assembly is not included in the price, we can also assemble it, the price varies from 3 to 6000 rubles. Again, depending on the manufacturer and the complexity of the model, they also require an electrical connection, but only, as a rule, for lighting and radio.
WC.
First, you need to decide which toilet you need, wall-hung or floor-standing. The use of installation often allows us to win back extra space in our, for the most part, small-sized bathrooms and toilets. Well, consider the material from which the toilet itself is made, is it porcelain or cheaper faience, it’s easier to wash porcelain over the years, the material is less porous, it does not turn yellow like faience, again this applies to “pure faience”, if it is covered with a special glaze, no problem, then consult with suppliers, I would not save . ..
dryer
Towel dryer dryer .
It’s better to buy a heated towel rail when we start working with you and decide on its location, and depending on this we choose the size, then the plumbers from Deza (because this is exclusively their monopoly) will make a bypass with leads for connecting it , which must be at a certain level. so that it is sure to pump and warm properly, it happens
especially important when the heated towel rail is taken out a considerable distance from the risers. Well, the material, of course, is stainless steel, which is best resistant to hard Moscow water. Speaking of plumbers, you can’t do without their services, they don’t transfer water shutoffs and access to risers to anyone, and you need to change the taps, unless it’s a new building and you value your peace of mind and don’t want to take risks. We put two taps, ball Bugatti, half an inch for cold and hot water and an inch for a heated towel rail. For the manufacture and installation of a bypass, plumbing in Moscow charge from 12 to 18,000 rubles … so put this amount into your budget.
Boiler.
Should I install this appliance in my bathroom? It’s up to you to decide, the annual, regular shutdown of hot water in Moscow, of course, causes some inconvenience, but even a small boiler of 30 liters requires a lot of space for installation, if the bathroom is spacious, there are no problems, we often hung the boiler directly into the plumbing cabinet above the water meter knot, though there is no place for it everywhere, but most often you have to sacrifice precious centimeters of free space. So, choose your priorities. But there is another solution – an instantaneous water heater, rather small dimensions allow you to place such equipment (besides, it is relatively inexpensive) anywhere in the plumbing cabinet. What is the difference? The storage boiler provides a full supply of hot water to your apartment, you close the hot water tap on the riser and start the hot water supply of the apartment through your boiler.
With a water heater, everything is different, you close the hot water supply completely, let cold water through the water heater and use warm water, you cannot turn on the admixture when you use an instantaneous water heater. But you will have warm water, which is also not bad, it turns on automatically when you turn on the water, but if someone takes a shower, it’s better not to open the water in the kitchen … it won’t pull. and its connection also requires a separate power supply line with a separate machine, because it “eats” decently, about 5 kW ..
Р
water distribution
Most often, we perform collector wiring, where pipes are routed using FAR combs, due to which a separate pair of pipes goes to each point in your apartment, which will allow you, regardless of the others, to shut off any device, Work plumbing fixtures do not affect each other, and if, for example, someone takes a shower, and someone decides to wash the dishes in the kitchen, you can not be afraid of a drop in water temperature, as happens with a series connection of water supply.
Which pipes should be used for water supply?
Recently, the choice has been between metal-plastic and polypropylene, metal-plastic is more expensive, each fitting, in addition to being expensive, also narrows the clearance, but it is convenient to mount. Polypropylene pipes are mounted using a thermal soldering machine, consumables are cheap, profitable and reliable. And of course, it’s worth saying that Rehau pipes are gaining popularity, what can I say, reliable, functional, expensive. Everything is more expensive, the fittings are the pipe itself and of course the work, by the way, it is not difficult to mount them, but the installation tool is German, expensive. If you want innovation, be prepared to pay many times more than for polypropylene, although reliability and
the functionality of polypropylene is not inferior, in my opinion, to Rehau, this is with regard to water supply, heating is another matter, where there is a different pressure and the possibility of “water hammers”, here the rehau system undoubtedly has all the advantages.
Everything related to water supply, sewerage and ventilation is better to buy together, because the market is littered with low-quality products, or entrust the purchase of combs, filters, fittings and other elements of the water supply system completely to me. Draft materials such as plaster mixture (rodband), tile adhesive (Knauf, Unis 2000), drywall (Knauf moisture resistant) can be bought with delivery in large retail chains OBI, Leroy Merlin,
Well, after we have prepared everything, you can proceed directly to the very finishing of the bathroom . The first stage is the dismantling work, the old tiles are removed from the walls and the floor and all the old plumbing elements are dismantled, the sink is thrown away, and the toilet bowl and the bathtub are only freed from fastening, but after the dismantling work we put it temporarily in place, we cut off the old pipes immediately before wiring the new one water supply. Often it is necessary to dismantle the cabin of the bathroom and toilet completely, because it is made of aceid (asbestos-cement board 1 cm thick) on a wooden frame and not only does it not have the required rigidity, asbestos itself is a toxic material and is recognized as a carcinogen . .. do cladding on such walls is not advisable for many reasons. Firstly, the geometry of the walls in such cabins is always
broken (lack of 90° corners), which will affect after installing the bathroom and installing the slatted ceiling, the last slat will show this difference. Then, due to insufficient strength on such walls, the seams on the tiles may crack over time, moisture accumulates … mold and fungus … do you need it? Either the cabin is made of plaster i.e. reinforced gypsum, 4 cm thick with a low ceiling – block cabins. Such cabins are made at DSC, partially completed with plumbing and arbitrarily lowered by a crane into your future apartment, leaving a gap between the carrier plates … a couple of times I saw a gap of up to 25 cm … As a result of dismantling such a bathroom, we get up to 15 cm in length and width, and up to 20 centimeters in height, extra space, which you will agree, in our conditions is not superfluous. Moreover, as a rule, the ventilation system in such cabins is “nothing”, at the construction stage through the ventilation ducts construction, and household garbage pours onto the roof of your cabin, clogging the ventilation duct, which is unfortunately inaccessible and then you breathe it all your life. By dismantling the cabin, we get the opportunity to completely renew the ventilation system. Laying walls from a 7.5 cm foam block using Perlfix mounting adhesive will take a day and a half and the walls are ready, you can start finishing the bathroom. The second stage is cutting and chasing the walls for sewerage and water supply wiring – the dirtiest and dustiest work, then assembling the water meter unit and wiring water supply and sewerage. We cut off the old pipes and plant new ones, that is, you will have to do without water for 3-4 hours, then we assemble the plumbing box, calculate the height and put an invisible hatch to the size of your tile and plaster the walls under the lighthouse. The next day, we install ventilation and install electrical wiring.
Waterproofing the floor in the bathroom
is certainly an important finishing step, this procedure will extend the life of the entire room and eliminate problems with neighbors in case of known misunderstandings. After that, we take out the bath and the toilet and lay the tiles on the floor, we try to do it in the evening, so that you have to do without the toilet only in the evening and at night, other options are possible that are being discussed. In the morning we bring in a new bathtub, set it to the level, I even deepen the edges a little into the wall so that the water is guaranteed not to flow over the bathtub. Well, let’s start creating! Usually the main tiled decor is laid out just above the bathroom, because the rest of the walls are usually covered, either by a mirror, a heated towel rail, a door or furniture. Facing works take 4-6 days, after which we grout the seams, we take the best grout according to the tone of the tiles and well-known manufacturers, so that the seams do not darken and repel water well. Then we mount the ceiling with lighting and install the door.
And finally, we take out the old toilet bowl, install and fix the new one, connect the hygienic shower. We bring in and connect the moidodyr and a mirror with illumination, install a mixer with a shower rack. The final step will be the installation of various wall elements that the hostess bought a long time ago and was looking forward to this exciting moment.
Opening champagne! Welcome to the new bathroom .
In fact, the entire turnkey bathroom renovation takes 15-20 days. Do not believe companies and craftsmen who promise you a period less than this – a deliberate deception, or they mean finishing the bathroom with plastic panels. There are options where special dismantling is not required and the walls are level and do not need plastering, where we do not ditch the walls, but we make a small box a step for communication pipes and trimming is not enough, a budget option, where people are short of money, or they are renovating an apartment for rent for rent, where you can do the entire repair of the bathroom in ten days. But more often, on the contrary, the work only increases, because the dismantling of the entire bathroom entails an involuntary repair of the kitchen, or repair of the corridor, or both.
