Small printers come in many forms; you can find all-in-ones designed for home use, portable models with a built-in rechargeable battery, and even film-based printers that produce polaroid-like pictures. The best small printer we’ve tested is the HP OfficeJet 250. This compact all-in-one is a great option if you travel for work. It fits easily into most mid-size backpacks, and you don’t need a power outlet because it has an internal rechargeable battery. The battery is good for about 225 prints and takes around two hours to charge. Despite the printer’s compact size, you still get a sheetfed scanner that produces high-quality scans. You can connect to the printer via USB or Wi-Fi connectivity, and you can also print directly from a USB flash drive.
Printing-wise, it produces sharp black and color documents that look good enough for a professional work environment. However, it prints very slowly at three black or six color pages per minute when plugged in and even slower when running on battery.
Also, it can only print 100-150 pages before the ink runs out, meaning you’ll need to replace the cartridges often. The cartridges aren’t overly expensive, but the cost will still add up if you print a lot. It’s even smaller than the HP OfficeJet 250, so it takes up less space and is easier to carry around, but it’s a print-only unit, meaning it doesn’t have a scanner. You can connect to the printer via USB or Wi-Fi, and thanks to its support for Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service, you can print easily from your mobile device without installing any drivers or third-party apps.
The print quality for black and color documents is good; text looks sharp, and fine elements are present. However, colored areas, like in a graph or pie chart, look noticeably grainy, and that graininess is also visible in photos.
As for its printing speed, it’s very slow at seven black or three color pages per minute, and while it can print double-sided sheets, it can only do so manually, meaning you have to flip the pages yourself when prompted. Unlike our picks above, this model is less suitable for on-the-go use as it lacks an internal battery, meaning you must use it plugged in. It’s also a little more cumbersome because it’s wider and taller.
It’s still a very compact printer and a great choice for tight spaces, like a bedroom or dorm room.The biggest drawback is its page yield. The ink cartridges are only good for about 100 black and 40 color prints, and even though they’re cheap, you’ll have to buy them often, which adds up quickly. This model feels well-built and is tiny enough to fit easily into a handbag. It supports Wi-Fi Direct, meaning it can generate its own Wi-Fi signal, so you can use it anywhere, even outdoors.
Naturally, as it’s a portable printer, it runs on battery, and the battery is only good for about 20 prints.As for its print quality, it isn’t nearly as good as a desktop printer; however, that’s normal because it produces Polaroid-like pictures that you can put in a wallet or stick on a fridge door. The dye cartridge and proprietary film always come together in packs of 20, and unfortunately, the package isn’t exactly cheap, so it can get very expensive if you print a lot. Since a few employees may need to share this printer, a good business printer should be able to print a large number of pages at an affordable cost and without constantly running out of ink. Pages should print quickly, and these printers should have additional features like duplex printing or an automatic document feeder that can help simplify your workload.

The best printer for small business use we’ve tested is the Brother MFC-L8905CDW, an all-in-one color laser model. It produces incredibly sharp documents, doesn’t take long to warm up, and prints quickly at up to 32 pages per minute. Its flatbed scanner is large enough to scan Legal-size sheets (8.5″ x 14″), and it has an automatic feeder with single-pass duplex scanning to quickly process multi-page and double-sided sheets. The toner cartridges aren’t overly expensive and last a long time, but you do need to replace the drum separately, which is an added expense. Thankfully, you won’t have to do it all that often, as the drum is usually good for around 30,000 prints. You get USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet connectivity, and there’s support for NFC, Apple AirPrint, and Morpia Print Service.
Like most printers, the MFC-8905CDW is only one of many variants in the lineup.
If you want to save money and don’t mind compromising on a few features, you can go with the Brother MFC-L8900CDW (or MFC-L8895CDW at Costco), which performs identically but has a smaller display. The Brother MFC-L8610CDW also performs identically but has an 8.5″ x 11″ flatbed scanner and doesn’t support duplex scanning. Laser models aren’t ideal because printed pictures look dull and lack detail. If you need to print photos or graphics for your business, we have two recommendations: the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 and the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550. The former prints faster and has more features, like an automatic feeder with duplex scanning, while the latter produces higher-quality photos. They’re both supertank models that yield thousands of prints, so you won’t have to worry about high running costs. That said, they’re more expensive upfront.

It produces high-quality documents, doesn’t take long to warm up, and prints quickly at 36 pages per minute. It doesn’t cost much to maintain, as the toner cartridge yields about 1200 prints and is cheap.
Also, unlike color printers, there’s only one cartridge to replace. The scanner scans up to seven pages per minute through the feeder and processes double-sided sheets in a single pass.If you want to save more money, you can look at a cheaper variant of the MFC-L2750DW, the Brother MFC-L2710DW. It performs almost identically but lacks duplex scanning and prints a tad slower at 32 pages per minute. It doesn’t have a touch-sensitive display but instead has more buttons to help you navigate the settings menu. The print quality is the same, and its page yield is similar as it uses the same toner cartridge.
For businesses that need color printing, get the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e. It’s an inkjet alternative because most color laser printers are typically more expensive, so if you want something around the same price range as the Brother, inkjet is the best option. It prints decently fast at 16 black or 14 color pages per minute and has a massive 500-sheet input tray capacity. The main drawbacks are that its black ink cartridge doesn’t yield as many prints as the Brother, and inkjet models typically require more maintenance.

The Brother HL-L2395DW variant is the same printer but with Ethernet connectivity, a larger touch-sensitive display, and a slightly faster printing speed.A color inkjet alternative in the same price range would be the Brother MFC-J4335DW. It has an ADF-equipped scanner, prints incredibly detailed photos, and has better black page yield. The Smart Tank Plus printer uses rechargeable ink tanks instead of expensive ink cartridges. This reduces waste that increases landfills and saves money spent on recharging the printer. The ink tanks have enough capacity for two years of use, and each refill can print between 6,000 and 8,000 pages (so it costs little to print one page).
