The interior of a wooden house made of timber inside: 10 interiors of wooden houses with photos
A house made of timber or logs is a special kind of wooden house, not only in terms of construction, but also interior design. Timber walls are rarely lined with drywall or plywood sheets, and even less often plastered—at least until the house has finally shrunk. This is not a quick matter – it depends on whether the log is used or timber, summer forest or winter, quality and drying conditions. There is evidence that even an old log house can “walk”: the tree expands and narrows with changes in temperature and humidity. And since no one likes problems, the interior of a house made of logs and timber most often involves wooden walls in a “naked” form. But even in these conditions, designers manage to create elegant, light, modern – and any kind of projects.
Let’s see how exactly they manage to do this on the example of ten houses built in the Moscow region. Under each project there are links where you can read full descriptions of projects, view the interior of a house made of timber (inside – photos and, almost everywhere, plans).

House 200 sq. m in Moscow region: family nest
This project by I.D. Interior design can be safely included in the textbooks on the design of a wooden house from a log. The owners – a family with a child – dreamed of getting a family nest with a warm atmosphere from a typical log house. First of all, the designers changed the layout of the open space on the lower level, moving the exit to the terrace from the living room to the kitchen. Thus, a bay window with a sofa area was formed in the two-height living room, and she herself finally straightened up (it was the letter “G”). Special words deserve work with color. To remove the characteristic yellowness of the log, the walls were tinted in a light gray, closer to white, shade. The house was immediately filled with freshness and light.
I.D.interior design
The swing doors from the side of the terrace are painted in deep blue and are the main accent of the wooden interior of the extension.
Pine shelving and sideboards have become a real decoration of the house, and all thanks to the color. Outside and inside, they are different: white, turquoise and woody shades complement and set off each other. All sorts of accents would look good against a light gray background, but the designers, figuratively speaking, do not go from whisper to shout – both doors and furniture are painted in dusty natural colors, textiles are matched to match. At the same time, there is no embarrassment about the rough log texture – on the contrary, this interior has a lot of untreated surfaces, scuffs, cracks and other traces of time. It is they who make the interior of a wooden house made of logs “lived in”, natural and cozy.

More to learn from this wooden log house
- If the fireplace looks too grandiose against the log walls, you can choose a wood-burning stove that suits the occasion. This project uses Jotul with a cast iron grate and pipe.
- The living room area is separated from the kitchen-dining area by means of hanging swings.
- An inexpensive IKEA kitchen can be easily transformed with slate countertops and backsplash tiles. Kitchen furniture was specially divided into two parts so that it does not resemble a typical “apartment” arrangement.
- The chairs in the kitchen were also bought from IKEA and repainted in different colors.
- The sauna sink is made from an old copper basin bought from the market.

90 002 House 350 sq. m. on Dmitrovsky Highway: a short game
This house on Dmitrovskoye Shosse belongs to a young family who loves to receive guests. For them, a veranda with a huge sofa area was specially built here. The veranda communicates with the kitchen, that with the dining room, and the dining room with the living room.
The height of the rooms in the house was from 5 to 7 meters, in some places the space turned out to be disproportionate to a person. So. To visually elongate the living room, designer Olga Kulikovskaya placed two large accents along its edges — a two-meter vase made of coconut flakes and a Chinese-style screen. And with the feeling of a “well” in the bedroom, a canopy helps to fight.
The only isolated room on the ground floor of the log house is the office (pictured). It is a clear confirmation that a log can be painted in a rich color without fear of slipping into kitsch and bad taste. The customer of this project did not want to hide the log house behind a solid finish, but at the same time he breathed unevenly towards the English interiors. Therefore, it was decided to paint the walls. In the daughter’s room, the walls turned beige and the ceiling turned blue. The living room brightened a little, and the veranda darkened. A complex gray-blue color was chosen for the cabinet. Dark classical furniture and accessories like a book stand or a magnifying glass give it austerity and academic character. A stump under the desktop urges not to take status things too seriously. AT

What else can we learn from this wooden log house? It not only removes the effect of a blank wall and breaks the linear pattern of logs, but also looks very interesting.

Tatyana Rozhkova
9000 7 House 680 sq.m in the village. “Benelux”: sea and space
The owners of this house live in Europe, so they come to visit Russia. They appreciate silence and refinement of manners, love the sea and yachting – all this designer Tatyana Rozhkova should have transferred to the interior of a house made of timber. It was decided to whiten the tree with a glazing composition, making the space as light as possible while maintaining the wood structure. The ideological center of the building is a tall living room with a fireplace unusual for a wooden country house. Usually such models are made in black, but for Tatiana they made an exception – they were made in white gloss.
The futuristic design seems to be hanging in the air, because you simply do not pay attention to the dark “leg”. The picture is complemented by pebbles at the base and a ceiling lamp made of many glass plafond balls, reminiscent of ocean splashes, or a fragment of a cosmic landscape. An inquisitive eye will also find a direct allegory of a boat on the ceiling. All these details make the room surprisingly light, bright, cozy and modern.
Tatyana Rozhkova
The owners wanted the kitchen in the design of their house not to look like a kitchen. Then the author of the project suggested Sheer ball kitchen from Gatto. When necessary, the upper, matte half of the ball rises – it houses the hood, and the sink, appliances and work area open in the lower part. When not in use, the kitchen looks like a ball hanging from the ceiling.
Tatyana Rozhkova
What else to learn from the example of this wooden house made of timber
- In a wooden house, the stairs should be independent of the main structure – due to the shrinkage of the timber. To make it without supporting pillars, German engineers had to be involved.
- The walls of the bathroom are also made of glued laminated timber, but covered with two onyx slabs.
- The white interior plays with textures and materials: carved frames, wooden sculptures, textiles to match the walls.

“Own history” | Zasimova Lada, Nikolaeva Victoria
House of 560 sq.m. on Pyatnitskoe shosse: a thin red line Red. Thanks to her, a “red thread” appeared in a calm gray interior, passing through a fireplace, armchairs, a table, an exhaust hood. The house belongs to the large family of designer Lada Zasimova and was originally built so that adults and teenage children would have their own separate living rooms. A smiling slate fireplace adorns the main living/dining area. Red elements are all over the place on a gray background, it’s always a win-win combination, just like the combination of wood and stone. Such an amount of slate on the fireplace portal is a purely decorative find, only a firebox is a typical one in the fireplace, the rest was made according to the designer’s project. The walls throughout the house are left wooden, they were slightly shaded with paint.
Own History | Zasimova Lada, Nikolaeva Victoria
Teenage living room is located on the second floor. It is illuminated by windows made in the roof, painted to look like an aircraft hangar. There are more colors in the interior of this room. The geometry of the space here is set by glued beams and ceiling beams – they are specially highlighted in color.

What else can we learn from this wooden house made of timber
- The large window in the bathroom overlooks the forest – you can enjoy it right from the bath. To make the room look lighter and more spacious, the wall opposite the window is mirrored.
- The handbag that has served its purpose has ended up in a spectacular firewood rack next to the fireplace.
- A wooden table with easy chairs in the dining room is positioned so that most of the guests have a view of the apple orchard.

A house of 420 sq. m in the Odintsovo district: a chalet and a transparent fireplace
The design of a house made of timber in the chalet style is very different from the dwellings of the “Russian hut” format. As a rule, a chalet involves a two-story building, where the first floor is made of stone (brick), and the second is actually made of timber. Exposed beams, dark wood, rough stonework, stairs, and subdued lighting—houses in this style often look alike. You can’t say the same about Tatyana Ilyina’s project in the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region. Despite the fact that all the conventions of style are observed, the house belonging to a mature married couple has its own character. The highlight of the first floor, where all public spaces are combined, is a double-sided through fireplace. In addition to the main task, it acts as a light window between the living room and the hall. An unusual fireplace, an antique dining group, for which the walls on the ground floor were made white, a designer glass door with facets – all these details make the design of a house made of timber unique (we can see a photo of them at the link below).
Tatyana Ilyina (Sorokina)
Four bedrooms and three bathrooms are located on the second floor. Each of the bedrooms has a bed and a mezzanine with storage stairs, but otherwise their design is very different. So, in the daughter’s room, white decor and a white carved headboard stand out against a wooden background. In the master bedroom, by contrast, the furniture, radiators, and staircase are painted dark, while the headboard is hand-painted with a Japanese theme. In my son’s bedroom, the headboard is decorated with built-in mirrors. By the way, the balcony in the house is made so that you can get there from each bedroom, and it is decorated differently in each of these zones.
Tatyana Ilyina (Sorokina)
What else can we learn from this wooden house made of timber? This is work on the bugs – at first it was fixed directly on the beam, but due to temperature changes, the shell simply tore apart.
It is no coincidence that in this project, black and white Portuguese tiles lie on the floor in the kitchen.

Architectural Bureau Sretenka
House 200 sq. m in the village. Dukhanino: eco-style and a cloud on the ceiling
Initially, the owner of this house made of timber in the photo, a yoga teacher, dreamed of a pronounced ethnic style, but the architects of the Sretenka bureau managed to convince her: all these chalets and country are too unnatural in our latitudes. It was decided to support the ethnic theme with unobtrusive details (drums, rugs), and make the interior in an eco-style, light and modern. The design of a house made of timber has its limitations – most of the walls here are load-bearing, they cannot be removed or moved. To lighten the wooden space of the ground floor and unite the hall and the living room, the designers suggested using textiles. An unusual lamp appeared on the ceiling as a through line: fluorescent lamps were hidden under a non-combustible white cloth. This “cloud” draws attention away from the abundance of wood in the interior and visually raises the ceiling. The boundaries of the zones are separated by openwork partitions-screens made of fabric. There is no eye-catching color in the whole house – all shades are selected in the natural range of the local nature. This technique allows you to quickly relieve stress and relax.

, but in the end they abandoned them in favor of plaster “under the tree “. She also finished the ceiling in the living room.
A lot of designer furniture and accessories are produced in eco-style: in this project, for example, the Arco floor lamp by Flos in the living room and the Stingray rocking chair by Fredericia in the fireplace area are used.

Architectural Bureau LOFTING
House 33 6 sq.m in the village. “Nikolskie Lakes”: Dr. Chaos
The interior of this wooden mansion is built not only on the contrast of tradition and modernity, but also on architectural cunning. It just so happened that the house from a bar was built according to the project, where the main premises were meant to be large and bright, but abounded in cuts, beams, external and internal corners of a complex roof. All this did not allow separate rooms with different areas and heights to become a single whole. Architects Ilya Shulgin and Kirill Kochetov came up with a non-trivial move – to distract attention from the form, break up the existing geometry, add “chaos” and thereby streamline the dynamics, equalize proportion and achieve stylistic uniformity. They decided to divert attention with the help of accents – furniture, light and accessories. There are many such accents in the house: it is a large shelving system with a built-in fireplace and open shelves in the two-height living room, and cabinets in the kitchen and office that echo with it, and spectacular filament lamps hung at different heights in the living room.
Architectural bureau LOFTING
In the interior of each room of the house, the same set of shades is repeated: natural wood under oil (walls, ceiling), dark wood (floor, stairs, windows, furniture), light colors (upholstered furniture, textiles) . Against the background of the warm rough texture of the timber, glossy dark accents are built in (facades in the kitchen, glass and marble countertops in the dining room and living room).

What more can you learn from this log house
- In order to “level” and lighten the complex ceiling, “sails” made of dense synthetic fabric appeared on it, behind which lamps are hidden. The sails can be washed like curtains.
- Two-layer triplex glass railings make the oak staircase look much lighter.
- Tape lighting on the ceiling made it possible to do without a central chandelier in the office.
- The “wooden” style has been preserved in the children’s room: the walls are made of timber. Children grow up fast, why change the interior every year?
- One of the walls was decorated with gray porcelain stoneware – it works in contrast with the wood.

Tatyana Alenina Design Bureau
House 400 sq. m in the village Novoglagolevo: all shades of the garden
Designing a wooden house for a family with four children, designer Tatyana Alenina drew inspiration from outside the window. The owners wanted to get an interior in the style of a Russian dacha, but with English accents (the head of the family is British), so there are no huge bright spaces or modern cabinet furniture. Intimacy and comfort, warmth and goodness – this is what the design of the house is based on.
Most of the shades in the interior came directly from the area where wild flowers and herbs coexist with well-groomed flower beds, and mushrooms grow in the grass. Sandy, floral, mushroom, mint, earthy, herbaceous, brown – there are just no colors in this project. For example. the walls in the common space of the living-dining-kitchen are painted in a gray-green-brown, earthy shade, and the ceiling is in a milky one. The armchairs in the living room were upholstered in olive linen and cotton, and the sofas were dressed in olive velvet and chocolate chenille. The curtains were made of gray-beige linen, and the Roman blinds were made of silk with yellow-green-olive stripes. The most complex color – a delicate rose with a matte velvety – is found on the pillows in the parent’s bedroom.
Design Bureau of Tatiana Alenina
Decor in the rooms to match the colors: old landscapes of the Russian garden (the colors on them echo the shades of the interior), spherical vases with sand and succulents, marble facing of the fireplace, quartz countertop. Textiles are exclusively natural: linen, velvet, silk, cotton.

- Televisions and audio equipment are hidden in cupboards (pictured). The doors do not interfere with watching TV, they slide inwards.
- The timber is painted with paints with good hiding power so that the shade of the wood does not affect the overall color.
- Winter and summer removable covers were sewn for sofas (outside the city, the change of seasons is clearer, the house can be adjusted).
- In the kitchen, two additional windows overlooking the garden were specially cut. I had to sacrifice the top line of cabinets.
- In order to unify the interior, the plinth in all rooms on the first floor was painted in a mushroom shade.

9000 4 House 194 sq.m in Odintsovo district: wallpapers are allowed
The log cottage, where a couple with four children live, is decorated in the style of a “country near Moscow”: there was a place for samovars, accounting accounts and a wooden wheel, as well as forged baseboards, wall engravings, braid and piping. However, nothing stands out from this eclectic set. Most of the walls are tinted in cream, some in white and grey.
Tatyana Ivanova I Interior Designer & Decorator
Partitions on the second floor are made of drywall, which allowed us to decorate the walls with wallpaper. This material is rarely seen in a log house, although a good wallpaper with floral ornaments goes well with wood. For the parent bedroom, we chose Swedish black and white wallpaper with a floral print that echoes the pattern of the wrought-iron headboard. The colors of the walls are supported by a homespun rug.

More to learn from this log home
- The checkerboard tiles in the living room are not really tiles, but cleverly painted boards. The larch floor was covered with rhombuses of light and dark shades, marking it with masking tape. Sofas are also located diagonally, maintaining the rhythm set by the “tile”.
- Chairs of different shapes, but close in spirit, bought from a company that sells furniture for bars and cafes.
- In the interior of the house there was a place for a collection of samovars – on the upper cabinets of the kitchen, a collection of coasters – on a pretty kilim in the living room, and a collection of painted plates decorates the wall in the dining room.

NASONOV DESIGN WERKE
House m in the village. Vatutinki: warm to warm
A family with two children lives in this log house. On the ground floor there are all public areas – a hall, an entrance hall, a guest room, a kitchen-dining room, a swimming pool and a living room. Designer Ilya Nasonov retained the warmth of natural timber as much as possible, only removing yellowness with the help of a special impregnation. Armchairs upholstered in a characteristic cage, a chocolate-colored leather sofa, an open library fill the space of the living room and fireplace areas with comfort and respectability. And the painted plates on the walls, playful frills and tacks for curtains, elegant metal chandeliers and deliberately folk cup-plafonds, vintage furniture send either to Provence, or to the atmosphere of a Russian dacha. Quite confusing is the collection of popular prints and matryoshka dolls named after a chest of drawers in the Chinese style. This warm eclecticism shows us that any antiquities can be entered into the interior.
NASONOV DESIGN WERKE
Place of power – a living room with a spectacular fireplace and a library. A fireplace with openwork lining is the most spectacular detail of the living room. It rises on the podium like a cake or a tea set
Harmless white light was chosen as a contrast in the whole project – milky cornices, skirting boards, curtains and lamps make the space lighter and more airy. Despite the apparent simplicity, the interior is full of details, they just do not catch the eye. So, for example, the ceiling in the “cage” and the pattern on the parquet echo each other.
NASONOV DESIGN WERKE
More to learn from this timber house
- White skirting boards and cornices will help to hide the effects of house shrinkage if necessary.
- Beams painted white from below – this technique works to “enlarge” the ceiling.
- Frameless furniture is a full member of the interior.
For example, in a children’s bedroom, a green armchair is a single composition with lamps.

Life inside and outside the house
The specificity of a person’s life in an individual house located on a separate land plot is that it is not limited only to the internal space of the house itself, it extends to the entire land plot. In this regard, in world practice, the construction of an individual house is usually called the development of an individual land plot, meaning by this not just the construction of an individual house, but the creation of conditions for human life, both inside the house and outside – on the entire land plot. Next, we will talk about how life outside the house differs from life inside.
An individual residential building differs from an apartment in that the living space of a person is not only the house itself, but the entire individual land plot. Therefore, when embarking on the development of a land plot, it should be perceived as a single living space of a person, simply consisting of two parts – internal and external. Of course, life inside the house is somewhat different from life outside, but at the same time, only together they are able to organize a full-fledged human life on an individual land plot.
So, the living space of a person outside the house largely repeats his living space inside the house. In some cases, you can even say that it is a complete double of the internal living space. And only one single element of the planning structure of the internal living space does not have its counterpart in the living space outside – this is the bedroom. Indeed, the bedroom is an element of a person’s private (private) life, and it is rather problematic to provide it outside the house. All other elements of the internal planning structure of a person’s living space are easily duplicated by elements of a person’s living space outside the house. And first of all it concerns the so-called elements of the living space of common use.
Thus, the living space of a person outside the house should begin to be equipped from the kitchen. Just as the house itself begins with the kitchen, in the same way, the living space of a person outside the house begins with the creation of the kitchen. The main specific feature of such a kitchen is the possibility of cooking on an open fire. Cooking food on an open fire inside the house is not entirely practical and convenient. The kitchen outside the house is perfect for this.
Next to the kitchen is the dining room. It also belongs to the planning elements of a common house, therefore it has an embodiment, both inside the house and outside. Something specific dining outside the house is no different from the dining room inside the house. The only thing to note is that it is desirable to place all external planning elements adjacent to the same internal planning elements: a kitchen with a kitchen, and a dining room with a dining room. But deviations from this rule are also possible. So, it is quite possible that an individual house does not have its own internal dining room for a number of different reasons. Therefore, the only dining room he has is the dining room outside the house. In this case, the outside dining area is adjacent to the inside kitchen.
Behind the dining room, the internal and external version in an individual residential building is embodied in a common (family, living room) room. It, like the two previous planning elements, is located adjacent to each other. But unlike the kitchen and dining room, the external common room can be realized, among other things, as a continuation of the internal private premises of an individual house. The bedroom in its structure can also contain, in a sense, its own living room, but not always, as in the case of the dining room, it can be internal and have only an external incarnation. Therefore, there may well be several external common rooms in the house.
