Whatever you do, don’t be blah. “Why pigeonhole yourself?” says San Francisco designer Regan Baker. “The beauty of tile and its many colors is that it offers a wonderful way to showcase your unique personality” Currently trending tiles she sees on the horizon: veined marble and custom ceramic tiles that have a lot of movement, as well as delft tiles adorned with charming vignettes. What is the most popular tile for bathrooms?
To add visual interest to shower walls, “most of our clients lean toward rectangular, brick-shaped tile in a solid color,” says Audrey Scheck, founder and CEO of Austin-based Audrey Scheck Design. “The wide variety of installation options—including straight stack, offset brick pattern, chevron, and herringbone—allows for even a solid-colored tile to bring interest to the space. ” Scheck’s noticed a rise in using graphic and unique bathroom tile design in moderation in spots where they’ll have a big impact, such as shower niches and shower floor tiles. “Using a more striking tile in smaller doses is a great opportunity to infuse a space with character and personality,” she says. Baker notes Fez tile surging in popularity “because it has a glazed, handmade look that allows more variance in color, which creates a visual feeling similar to that of a heather blanket,” and she prefers the eye-catching choice applied with thinner grout.
What color tile is best for the bathroom?
“Lighter-colored tiles are always a wonderful option to keep things airy, but if it’s a moody bathroom, you’re aiming for, dark, saturated colors, which will work just as well—so long as they’re paired with great lighting,” says Megan Prime, principal of Brooklyn-based architecture and interiors firm JAM. Can’t decide whether to embrace natural light or go for a pop of color? Scheck has a fun approach: “We love the contrast of mixing dark and light tiles in the same room. We’ll often use a darker tile on the bathroom floor and go lighter on the walls to draw the eye up.” Call it the best of both tile worlds.
Is it better to use small or large tiles in a small bathroom?
Smaller tiles are often best for a smaller bathroom to maintain an appropriate sense of scale, Baker says. “They also create more texture that doesn’t feel cheap.” Prime looks to the architectural scale of the room to tip off tile size. “For instance, for larger bathrooms, we suggest tiles with a slightly larger scale; for smaller bathrooms, we may choose a mosaic or a smaller subway tile to give the illusion of more space,” she says. And small tiles offer more than just visual perks, especially when it comes to floor tiles. Says Scheck: “For shower floors specifically, we use a smaller mosaic tile so that there are ample grout joints to prevent slipping.”
1. Punch up penny tile
“A rectangular cabinet would have felt out of place,” Mckenzie says. His curvy custom design, on the other hand, is the perfect complement to the rounded walls. “The curves create a gentleness in the bathroom while using a contemporary architectural language that is informed by the arches, ornament, and details of the heritage house.”
Photo: Sean Fennessy
Rather than your typical sharp-angled corners, Mckenzie chose rounded edges. “We used a standard 90-degree plaster cornice to finish the corners, then wrapped them in round penny tiles,” he says. “The result is quite fluid and softens the feel of the room.” Another benefit? Less waste—there was no need to cut the tiles to fit as you would with regular corners.

This bathroom in a 19th century home by Melbourne, Australia-based architect Thomas Mckenzie—director of the firm Winwood Mckenzie—is splashed with various shades of pink underfoot for a pop of color, but it’s the curves that really provide visual interest. “We used a standard 90-degree plaster cornice to finish the corners, then wrapped them in round penny tiles,” Mckenzie says. “The result is quite fluid and softens the feel of the room. ” Another benefit? Less waste—there was no need to cut the tiles to fit as you would with regular corners.
2. Bring on midcentury graphics

Visually bold, the geometric tile-wall bathrooms in this modernist residence by Barcelona designer Noé Prades are filled with color—blue in one (where a wicker mirror adds texture) and pink in the primary (where Noé designed two midcentury-inspired mirrors flanking a Nuura wall lamp). Geometric tiles adorn the walls for a dynamic, contemporary, and surprising look.
3. Color with grout
The red and green is a killer combination.

The bathroom adds the right dose of quirk.

Red and green is a killer color palette combo, as any crimson-hued garden rose will attest. This bathroom, reimagined by Parisian interior designer Céline Poulfort, received a bold transformation via a floor-to-ceiling renovation. The white-tile bathroom walls were spiced up with red grout, which gives it “a more playful and graphic character,” Poulfort says. Green walls also lend an edge, but unlike with green tiles, if the homeowners tire of the color, it can be easily changed.
4. Indulge with black-and-white color palette
The black Clé tiles cover three fourths of the wall, while the hand-applied plaster above is a nod to the building’s history. The ledge creates a strong line and is a great place to store things, whether it’s on the vanity or in the shower.

It has long pleased customers with its quality. There are similar characteristics with other materials, but they are few. The tile has more advantages that can make it unique.
Design in the bathroom should be, first of all, comfortable, as well as simple and sophisticated.
- Moisture resistant. In the bathroom, you must use options with a high level of moisture resistance. The tile is able to retain its shape under the influence of a huge amount of water.
- Durability. If the owners or guests of the house handled the tile normally, during the laying all the processes were carried out correctly, it will be able to hold out in excellent condition for several decades. Ceramic and glass options do not require special care, it is better not to specifically affect it. The stone version is more whimsical. If you take marble, it must be polished every 3 years.
- Wide selection. You can buy different sizes, colors and texture options. You can easily choose the design of tiles in the bathroom.
- Easy to care for. There is no need to buy special products for cleaning. You can clean with chemicals, because they do not affect the material.

Designing the bathroom yourself
Problems arise due to a small room. Owners of private houses or expensive apartments can afford large bathrooms in which tiles can be beautifully arranged. There is not enough space in ordinary apartments, you have to follow some rules to make the room beautiful, comfortable and visually enlarge it.
With the help of this material, you can decorate the room very boldly and in an original way, and without any damage to square meters.
Bathroom tile design attracts with its diversity. First, it is enough to study the popular models on the market. This will allow you to pre-select options that match the style of the room. Next, write out for yourself the parameters by which you will select tiles: colors, patterns or various effects, size, quantity, quality of tiles, maximum price level.
Bathroom finishing requires care and attention.
Pay attention to the quality. It is not worth saving: a high-quality version will last several generations, a low-quality one – a maximum of a year. Ceramic tiles must have a high level of resistance to high temperatures, high levels of moisture. Calculate in advance the exact amount of material. If you make the calculations correctly, you will be able to avoid mistakes and repeated returns to the store, respectively, wasting time.
Repair of the hygienic room should be done in such a way that it is beautiful, cozy and comfortable.

Of course, more expensive options will be of better quality and are presented in more sizes, colors, effects, but inexpensive models are also designed with modern technology in mind.
- Non-toxic. Toxins are destroyed during the firing procedure. If you use the tiles for a long time or if you have children living in your house, nothing will happen to the body.
- Low chance of bacterial and fungal growth. The latter is often found in the bathroom, which worries many owners. During production, the material is repeatedly exposed to high temperatures. This kills all microflora, so, unlike many other materials, tile reduces the level of bacteria to a minimum.
Everyone will be able to choose for themselves exactly the option that they like best or suit the price.
Mold can form between wall joints. This is not due to tiles. The walls in the apartments are not treated, so be sure to use an antifungal agent when laying.

- Stability to high humidity;

Important! Do not use floor tiles designed for walls. This is disadvantageous, because it will be softer and less resistant to stress.
You can be sure that even with prolonged contact with the material, no allergic reactions will occur.
During repair work, the material is often broken or specially sawn. After measuring the finish area, buy 15% more tiles. If you break a small amount, you won’t lose anything. To calculate, measure the area of \u200b\u200bthe floor and walls in the room. Look at several options by determining the exact size. 1. Decide on your style
In 2022, rational consumption, environmental friendliness and the rejection of everything superfluous and unnecessary are still in trend. Among the new bright trends is a departure from ideal forms and prim precision, designer Olesya Khudyakova notes. According to her, most of the tiles offered today are modern style with different style motifs: from ethnic to natural. However, there are some of the “clean” styles of this finishing material that you can take a closer look at.
Japandi style
This mix of two interior traditions – Scandinavian and Japanese – is gaining great popularity in 2022
(Photo: Jared Rice/Unsplash)
In fact, this is a mixture of two interior traditions – Scandinavian and Japanese. The style is gaining a lot of popularity in 2022, including when decorating bathrooms, says renovation expert Kirill Aksyonov. Japandi is characterized by natural soothing colors, such as white, beige or gray, combined with sandy shades. In such interiors, natural materials or imitations for them are mainly used. In the bathroom, it can be stone, wood or natural textile tiles as decoration.

(Photo: Max Vakhtbovych/Pexels)
Minimalism and understated aesthetics are still on trend, experts say. Depending on personal preferences in the bathroom, you can embody the ideas of Scandinavian, Japanese or French minimalism. A common feature of such interiors will be the predominance of one dominant color or several calm shades in a related range. Well suited, for example, white or gray tiles. Decorative elements and bright accents in such interiors are minimized or completely “sacrificed” to functionality.
Classic style
A time-honored bathroom finish that still holds its own today

A time-honored bathroom finish that remains relevant today. Unlike minimalism and japandi, in such interiors, according to experts, mosaics, borders and an abundance of decor will be appropriate. The color scheme of tiles in a classic interior is predominantly light (beige, ivory, peach, etc. ). By adding a few color or texture accents, a classic bathroom can be made more modern and interesting.

2. Decide on the tile material
If these are walls, then you can use glossy tiles, if the floor, then matte and structured – this will reduce slip
(Photo: Max Vakhtbovych/Pexels)
Porcelain stoneware is still the leader among finishing materials for bathrooms, says Kirill Aksyonov. This is an artificial material that is practically not inferior in its physical properties to its natural counterpart.
This tile is durable and highly resistant to various mechanical impacts and household chemicals. Porcelain tiles are produced in different shapes and designs, with or without a pattern, you can find options that imitate stone or wood. This tile is suitable for both walls and floors.
Another trend that will be relevant this year, according to experts, is the use of porcelain stoneware in the form of polished sandstone. “Besides the fact that such tiles look natural, natural and interesting, they are safe. It is difficult to slip on a rough surface if we are talking about flooring,” explains Kirill Aksenov. He also advises when choosing tiles for the bathroom to look at variations on the theme of stone and natural motifs – they are also in trend.
Africa, Japan, China: ethnic styles in interior design
3. Determine the size of the tiles
Tiles on the floor and walls must match in length. For example, a 120×60 tile on a wall and a 60×60 tile on the floor will meet at 60×60 sides. Otherwise, there is a possibility of mismatch
(Photo: Monstera/Pexels)
Wide-format tiles are in vogue today, experts say. A significant plus of large products is in a smaller number of butt joints and a solid pattern. The most popular tile sizes start at 60×120 cm. However, in installation it is easier to use the standard one, 60×60 cm, notes Kirill Aksenov. Small tiles – 20×20 and less – are more often used as a decorative element.
Large format solutions look equally good in both spacious and small bathrooms. But using a small tile with contrasting grout in a small room, there is a risk of making the room even smaller: a large number of butt joints will crush the space.
Large tiles laid seamlessly with matching grout, on the contrary, will expand the boundaries of the room due to the effect of a monolithic surface.
Kirill Aksenov , repair expert, founder of the school foremen and member of the State Duma’s expert council on construction, building materials industry:
by the number of tiles, otherwise there are situations when it may not be enough.
4.
Define your color palette
Today, tile manufacturers boldly play with colors and patterns: granite and travertine shimmer in different shades, and the color range of marble veins has become more diverse
(Photo: Max Vakhtbovych/Pexels)
Tiles of the entire palette of terracotta and gray colors remain in trend for bathroom decoration, notes designer Olesya Khudyakova. A still relevant technique with accents will help to avoid boring monochrome and not overdo it with color. It can be a contrasting wall, plumbing or other interior details. In general, planning a bathroom color scheme, as advised by architects, is best based on a maximum of two base colors.
If the bathroom is small, you can look at the classic shades for such rooms – white, light beige and light gray. Paradoxically, but dark interiors visually seem deeper – that is, such solutions can look good in a small bathroom.
When there is no desire to experiment with color, you can stop at a combination of black and white. According to the designers, this timeless solution still looks stylish and comfortable.
Olesya Khudyakova , designer, creator of the architectural studio Khudyakova Design:
— If you are determined to make something bright, then you need to choose a tile without special textures, in this case it becomes the background for style-forming elements.
Bathroom tiles: anti-trends
Styles and trends in design change over time and sometimes quite quickly, but few people are ready to update the design of the bathroom every year. Various details, decor and interior elements that can be changed will help to be in trend. According to designer Olesya Khudyakova, there are a number of things to avoid in bathroom decoration:
- Do not use blue colors or dolphin graphics. Firstly, it has long gone out of fashion, and secondly, cold shades are uncomfortable for many at the psychosomatic level;
- don’t use small background tiles;
- do not use plastic corners on the ends of the tiles;
- do not use plastic panels instead of tiles;
- do not use glossy tiles on the floors – this is at least traumatic.

It is better to start decorating a bathroom with a project. To do this, you can turn to professionals or get ideas and trends in catalogs. Here are a few designer tips to guide you in choosing your overall bathroom and tile concept for this year’s trends.

Olesya Khudyakova:
— A person removes the excess and uses only what is necessary. We remove the color noise that causes a feeling of clutter away in the lockers, the lockers themselves – out of sight, in niches. We mask everything we can. Mindfulness and reasonable consumption is a sure sign of style.

— Focus on tactile sensations without mixing more than two textures in one small room. In the installation area, you can afford a veneer panel that goes into cabinets.
